# 3xOSC in FL Studio: Build Your First Synth Patch

3xOSC makes much more sense once you find the second half of the instrument. Its three oscillator rows create the raw sound. FL Studio's Channel Settings supplies the volume envelope, filter and LFOs that make the sound behave like a playable bass, pluck or pad. The envelope has not gone missing; it lives outside the little generator panel.

For your first patch, keep one saw audible, write a short phrase, shape the volume and close a low-pass filter. Then blend in a second oscillator. You will hear what each change contributes, and you will have a usable sound to take into the next [sound-design lesson](https://flstudiopro.com/tag/sound-design/).

## What 3xOSC does—and what your licence includes

Image-Line describes [3xOSC as a subtractive synthesizer feeding the integrated Sampler](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/plugins/3x%20Osc.htm?ref=flstudiopro.com). Choose and mix oscillator shapes, then use the Channel envelope and filter to shape that material. Simple subs, plucks, leads, pads and noise layers are sensible starting jobs.

Export audio before closing a trial session. Check the licence of any extra effects you add, too.

The oscillator panel makes the source; Channel Settings shapes how it plays. These reconstructed panels explain the layout, not a preset to copy knob for knob.

## Load a clean channel and hear one source

Add 3xOSC from the Channel Rack and open its Channel button. Use a fresh channel for this exercise: a saved preset can carry envelope, filter and miscellaneous settings that are invisible in the oscillator panel. Write a one- or two-bar phrase in the [Piano Roll](https://flstudiopro.com/fl-studio-piano-roll/), including short and held notes. Add a chord if you are building a pad.

Keep **AM OSC 3 off**. Set the OSC 2 and OSC 3 Mix Level knobs to zero, select a saw on OSC 1, and begin with centred pan, neutral stereo detune and no added phase randomness. There is no OSC 1 solo button to hunt for: turning down the other two mix controls leaves OSC 1 audible.

Use the [Mixer routing guide](https://flstudiopro.com/fl-studio-mixer/) to put the channel on a named insert. Leave its effects bypassed while learning the source. Keep the listening level comfortable; a bright saw does not need to be loud to reveal what the filter changes.

## Choose a waveform for the sound you need

The seven choices are sine, triangle, square, saw, rounded saw, noise and Custom. Start with sine for a clean sub, triangle for a softer tonal layer, or saw when you want an obvious bright source to filter. Square offers a different, hollow character; rounded saw is another shade to audition rather than a genre rule.

Noise gives you an unpitched layer for a breath, transient or riser. Custom uses the sample loaded in the Channel's Sampler Settings. That is a different workflow from scanning a wavetable in a dedicated wavetable synth.

Switch shapes while the same phrase plays, and adjust output level when necessary for a fair comparison. A bright source can become soft after filtering. A simple sine can gain harmonics from later distortion. Choose the material that helps the next stage do its job.

Use these source roles as starting ideas. The waveform motifs identify the choices; they are not measured spectra or a restriction on what each shape can do.

## Coarse, Fine and the two Mix Level knobs

Coarse tuning spans −24 to +24 semitones for each oscillator; Fine spans −1 to +1 semitone. Use Coarse to establish a musical interval, such as a second source one octave below the first. Use Fine for small pitch differences and audible beating between layers. Fine-tuning two sources does not, on its own, make their sum stereo; pan and left/right differences determine the stereo result.

The Mix Level knobs control proportions. OSC 1 has no Mix Level knob. OSC 2 first takes a share from OSC 1; OSC 3 then takes a share from the combined OSC 1+2 pair. With AM OSC 3 off, these examples explain the arrangement:

Those are mix shares, not a promise of identical perceived loudness. Waveform, tuning and phase still affect the combined sound. If OSC 1 seems to get quieter as you bring in OSC 3, that is expected: OSC 3 reduces the first pair's share. For a bass, bring in only enough of the extra layer to make its role audible. Equal thirds are a useful demonstration, not a mandatory preset.

Set the OSC 1/2 balance first, then blend in OSC 3\. The bars represent source shares, not output meters or equal perceived loudness.

## Phase OFS, Detune, Phase Rand and Invert

**Phase OFS** changes the oscillator's starting position and permits different offsets for the left and right channels. **Detune** applies slightly different frequencies to those stereo channels; its middle position turns that effect off. **Phase Rand** adds randomness to the stereo phase of all oscillators. Start offsets, ongoing frequency differences and randomness are separate decisions.

For a steady sub, begin with restrained stereo differences and compare repeated notes in mono. For a pad, introduce width gradually, then listen to a chord after summing left and right. If the important part thins out, reduce the stereo offsets or detune before adding more processing.

**Invert** reverses polarity. Otherwise identical, equally mixed sources can cancel when one is inverted. A small Fine difference can instead create moving phasing because the sources no longer stay opposite throughout the note. This explains one possible cause of a suddenly silent patch; it is not the only cause.

The 3xOSC manual also identifies an onset-click risk when stereo phasing starts the waveform away from zero. Try a short volume-envelope attack and listen again. That can soften the discontinuity without a conspicuous fade-in. It will not repair every click elsewhere in the project.

The cancellation example assumes identical, equally mixed sources with one inverted. Try a short attack for onset clicks and check stereo changes in mono; neither is a universal fix.

## Build your first 3xOSC patch in eight steps

1. **Load a clean channel.** Add a fresh 3xOSC, route it to a named Mixer insert and bypass insert effects. If FL Studio is in trial mode, plan to export audio before closing.
2. **Keep OSC 1 audible.** Leave AM OSC 3 off, set OSC 2 and OSC 3 Mix Level to zero, and select a saw on OSC 1\. Keep the stereo controls neutral initially.
3. **Write a test phrase.** Use short and held notes across the range of the intended part. Use a chord as well for a pad.
4. **Shape the volume.** Open Envelope / Instrument Settings, select Volume and enable its envelope switch. Start with short delay and hold, a quick attack, a falling decay, a useful sustain level and a release that fits the gaps.
5. **Darken with a filter.** Choose Fast LP, keep resonance low and reduce Mod X until the saw softens. Compare with the brighter source so you can hear the change.
6. **Blend a tuned layer.** Bring in OSC 2, use Coarse to place it one octave below OSC 1, and leave Fine neutral at first. Adjust its Mix Level to support the main source; keep OSC 3 out.
7. **Check level and mono.** Compare the same phrase at similar loudness, test repeated attacks and listen in mono. Reduce the extra layer or stereo changes if the patch becomes less clear.
8. **Save the full Channel state.** Open Plugin Menu and choose Save channel state as... in its Channel section. Give the patch a clear name. In licensed FL Studio, test the saved state in a separate channel and reopen a separate project copy. In trial FL Studio, export audio before closing and defer the project-reopening test until unlocked.

Stop after a change that makes the patch worse and compare it with the previous state. An octave layer may simply be too strong for the phrase. A long release may overlap the next note. Both are easier to hear while the effects remain bypassed.

Keep AM off and OSC 2/3 Mix Level at zero until the layer step. This illustrated checklist summarizes the written controls; trial FL Studio requires an audio export before closing and an unlocked host for project reopening.

## Where the volume envelope lives

Open Detailed Wrapper Settings with the cog, then choose Envelope / Instrument Settings and the **Volume** target. Enable the envelope's switch at its top left. Drawing a curve while that switch is off will not apply the envelope.

The [Instrument Settings documentation](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/chansettings%5Fins.htm?ref=flstudiopro.com) describes four envelopes: Volume, Mod X, Mod Y and Pitch. Panning has an LFO but no envelope. This tab belongs to Sampler instruments and Sampler plugins; do not expect it on every third-party synth.

For Volume, Delay waits before the attack, Attack raises the level, Hold keeps the peak briefly, and Decay falls towards Sustain. Sustain is a *level*, not a duration. Release shapes the tail after note release. A pluck usually needs a quick attack, short hold, falling decay, low sustain and controlled release. A pad calls for a slower attack and a longer tail.

Listen with the intended MIDI note lengths. Low sustain can let a note fade while the key is still held, while a long release can overlap the next bass note. In Tempo mode, time controls follow project tempo; sustain level does not become a time control. Where an envelope offers AMT, a centred amount disables its effect even if a curve is present.

## Filter cutoff, resonance and a useful LFO

In Instrument Settings, Mod X controls filter cutoff and Mod Y controls resonance by default. Start with Fast LP and low resonance. Lowering its cutoff makes a bright source darker. With **Fast LP, Mod X at 100% and Mod Y at 0%**, filtering is bypassed. That setting is specific to this low-pass case: a high-pass filter at maximum cutoff can leave very little sound.

For a pluck with a brighter beginning, use a Mod X envelope and a nonzero amount. Keep the volume envelope responsible for the note's overall level and the filter envelope responsible for brightness. Separating those two jobs makes a quiet note easier to diagnose.

The five LFO targets are pan, volume, cutoff, resonance and pitch. Each offers sine, triangle and square shapes. Move AMT away from zero to hear modulation. Tempo synchronizes its time controls; Global lets it run continuously rather than restarting with each note. Try a modest pitch LFO for vibrato or a volume LFO for tremolo, and remove it if the phrase loses focus.

Use an [Automation Clip](https://flstudiopro.com/fl-studio-automation/) when the movement belongs to the arrangement, such as a filter opening across several bars. Global LFO mode changes note-restart behaviour; it does not create a Playlist automation curve.

## Four starting sounds worth saving

**Sub:** use one sine, restrained stereo settings, a short anti-click attack and a release that suits the gaps between notes. **Pluck:** choose saw or square, use a quick attack, short hold and decay, low sustain and a controlled release. Close a low-pass filter, then try a small filter envelope for a brighter onset. Judge the decay against the rhythm instead of copying an arbitrary time.

**Pad:** blend related sources, slow the volume attack and allow a longer release. A little Fine separation creates beating; controlled stereo detune or pan differences can add width. Check the dry chords in mono before using chorus or reverb.

**Noise riser:** choose noise, give it enough note length and envelope duration, and automate filter cutoff or level across the required bars. A separate channel makes it easy to shorten or mute the riser without changing a tonal patch.

## When to use AM OSC 3, Custom and HQ

AM OSC 3 makes oscillator 3 an amplitude modulator for oscillators 1 and 2\. Turn it on after you understand the ordinary mix. It can create more complex tones, and its effect depends on the sources and their tuning. Return to AM off when comparing the normal Mix Level examples above.

Custom reads the sample loaded in [Sampler Settings](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/chansettings%5Fsampler.htm?ref=flstudiopro.com). Keep the original audio available and test recall before moving or deleting it. Saving a preset is not a reason to assume every external dependency has been packaged. HQ enables high-quality anti-aliased oscillators. Image-Line notes that the standard oscillators use anti-aliasing during rendering, so live playback and an export can differ. It also notes that legacy projects load with HQ off. Audition high notes and compare the result in your actual project; do not assume a switch position from a different project or promise a fixed CPU saving.

## Fix silence, clicks, mud and unexpected CPU use

**No sound:** check that notes reach the correct channel, the channel and its Mixer route are audible, and the volume envelope is not keeping the level at zero. Return to one source with AM off and simplify inversion. Check the filter type and cutoff before deciding that the generator has failed.

**Clicks:** try a short volume attack, reduce stereo phase offsets and listen to one oscillator. **Mud:** shorten release and remove unnecessary low layers. **Weak mono:** reduce left/right differences, then rebuild only the width the part needs. These are isolation steps, not guaranteed diagnoses.

**High CPU:** compare HQ, overlapping notes, long releases and downstream effects separately. Use the symptom to choose the next check, then change one thing and listen again. These routes narrow the cause; they do not guarantee the diagnosis.

## Save the whole patch, including its envelope

Open **Plugin Menu** at the top left of the instrument window and choose **Save channel state as...** in the **Channel** section. Channel is a section heading, not another submenu to open. The [Wrapper's menu documentation](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/plugins/wrapper.htm?ref=flstudiopro.com) distinguishes this full Channel state from a narrower plugin preset. The state includes the Channel settings that complete a 3xOSC sound. A separate Mixer effects chain is outside that instrument state; preserve the project or save that processing separately.

Image-Line's default 3xOSC presets appear under **Channel presets / 3x Osc** in the Browser. That is a default browsing location, not a rule that you must save every custom preset in that exact folder. The separate Envelope Presets menu saves an envelope, not the whole synth patch.

Give the state a useful name and load it into a separate test channel. Check waveforms, tuning, mix, envelope and filter against the same phrase. With licensed FL Studio and licensed plugins, also reopen a separately named project copy. Keep the original project and any Custom source audio intact. Trial users should export audio before closing and postpone the project-reopening test until FL Studio is unlocked.

## Choose the next synth by the missing control

## 3xOSC questions

### Is 3xOSC included in every FL Studio edition?

Yes. Image-Line lists 3x OSC in every edition. Trial FL Studio still cannot reopen saved projects until you buy FL Studio; export audio before closing a trial session.

### Where is the ADSR envelope in 3xOSC?

Open Detailed Wrapper Settings with the cog, then Envelope / Instrument Settings and Volume. Enable the envelope switch at the top left. Alongside attack, decay, sustain and release, this envelope has delay and hold controls.

### How do I hear only oscillator 1?

Keep AM OSC 3 off and set the OSC 2 and OSC 3 Mix Level controls to zero. OSC 1 then occupies the full oscillator mix; it has no separate Mix Level knob.

### Why does oscillator 1 get quieter when I add oscillator 3?

OSC 3 takes a share from the combined OSC 1+2 mix. For roughly equal thirds, set OSC 2 to 50% and OSC 3 to about 33%, with AM off. Those ratios do not guarantee equal perceived loudness.

### Which waveform should I choose first?

A saw makes filtering easy to hear; sine is a clean sub starting point; triangle gives a softer tonal layer; noise suits unpitched effects. Choose for the role, then shape the envelope and filter.

### Why does 3xOSC click at note onset?

Stereo phase offsets can start the waveform away from zero and cause a click. Try a short volume-envelope attack and simpler phase settings with one oscillator. Other clicks may have a different cause.

### What is the difference between Fine tuning and stereo Detune?

Fine adjusts an oscillator's pitch within −1 to +1 semitone. Stereo Detune applies different frequencies to its left and right channels. Fine differences between layers can create beating without necessarily creating stereo width.

### Can 3xOSC use a custom waveform?

Yes. Custom uses the sample loaded in the Channel's Sampler Settings. Keep that source available and test recall; do not assume a saved preset has packaged every external dependency.

### Why does the filter or LFO seem inactive?

Check the target, enable any envelope you are using and move its amount away from zero where available. LFO AMT at zero applies no modulation. Fast LP also bypasses filtering with Mod X at 100% and Mod Y at 0%.

### How do I save a complete 3xOSC preset?

Open Plugin Menu and choose Save channel state as... in its Channel section to preserve the Channel settings as well as the generator. Test it in a separate channel; reopen a project copy only with FL Studio and its used plugins licensed. Trial users should export audio before closing.
