# 808 Slides in FL Studio: Glide Notes and Fixes

To make an **808 slide in FL Studio**, put a normal note in the Sampler's Piano roll, then add an overlapping Slide note at the pitch you want to reach. Keep both notes in the same color group. The Slide note starts the bend and its length sets the travel time; the ordinary note must keep sounding until the bend finishes.

The triangle note is not another bass hit. It steers a sound that is already playing. You do not need Channel Mono or Porta for this Sampler method. If your 808 comes from a third-party instrument such as Serum or Vital, skip to the plugin section: native Slide notes are not supported by VST instruments.

## Make one working 808 slide in seven steps

1. **Protect the original.** Save a separate project version and use a spare Pattern for the test. Keep the original sample file. If you are using the standard FL Studio trial, read the saving limitation below before closing anything.
2. **Choose the right Channel.** Load an 808 one-shot into a Sampler Channel in the Channel Rack, not as an Audio Clip in the Playlist. Confirm its tuning, then open that Sampler's Piano roll.
3. **Draw the sounding note.** With Slide mode off, draw one ordinary note. Play it from its start and check that the sample remains audible for the transition you want.
4. **Add the target.** Turn on the Piano roll Slide toggle and draw a shorter note at a different pitch, starting after the ordinary note begins. Keep it wholly inside the ordinary note's duration and use the same color group.
5. **Place the landing.** Move the Slide note so it starts where the bend should begin. Resize its right edge to where the target should be reached; extend the ordinary note if necessary.
6. **Check the properties.** For a pitch-only test, match the two notes' velocity, pan and modulation values. Turn Slide mode off again before drawing another ordinary bass hit.
7. **Listen from before the first note.** Confirm the start pitch, movement and landing, then replay with the song. Change one thing at a time: target pitch, start position or Slide-note length.

Under Image-Line's [standard trial rules](https://support.image-line.com/action/knowledgebase?ans=296&ref=flstudiopro.com), you can save a project but cannot reopen it in the trial. Reopening requires a suitable purchased license, with the plugins the project needs. A saved test copy is useful, but it does not remove that limitation.

## Choose the method from the instrument

Choose the route before changing settings. This diagram separates native Slide-note timing from Channel Mono and plugin-owned glide.

Use the first route for an 808 one-shot in the native Sampler. Channel Mono is an alternative for transitions between ordinary overlapping notes in supported native instruments. A third-party plugin normally provides its own glide controls. Do not enable every control named Slide, Porta or Mono and then try to diagnose the result.

## Check tuning and available sound first

A smooth glide can still land on the wrong note. Follow the [808 root-note and cents workflow](https://flstudiopro.com/fl-studio-tune-808/) if Piano roll labels do not match the pitch you hear. Here, tuning is a prerequisite; the task is to control movement between notes.

Hold a plain note before adding a slide. Listen for the point where the 808's body decays away. Drawing a longer MIDI note cannot invent more recorded sound. For a first test, use a long enough one-shot or shorten the bend. You can build a sustained source later.

Keep existing pitch automation and pitch-envelope movement out of the diagnostic copy. If ordinary notes at different pitches do not respond as expected, resolve the sample's pitch and [time-stretch settings](https://flstudiopro.com/fl-studio-time-stretch/) before changing the Slide notes. Do not reset the whole song to troubleshoot one Channel.

## Draw the carrier, then its overlapping target

The ordinary note is the **carrier**: it triggers the 808\. The Slide note supplies a destination, not a second attack. If the ordinary note ends too soon, the slide is cut short.

In this recreated timing view, the ordinary note continues beyond the target's end. Both notes belong to the same color group.

Start with one ordinary note and one target, in the same Piano roll. A gray ghost note from another Channel is not your sounding carrier. Check the Channel name at the top if you have several 808 layers.

Click the Slide toggle to draw the target, and click it again to leave Slide mode. You can double-click an existing note to open Note Properties and inspect its Slide setting. For an upward bend, put the target higher; for a downward bend, put it lower. Its left edge sets when movement starts and its right edge sets the intended arrival. Keep the carrier sounding across that whole interval. Starting playback halfway through the pair is a poor first test: replay from before the carrier instead.

## Control speed with the Slide note's length

Keep the start pitch, target pitch and bend start fixed. Shorten only the target Slide note to arrive sooner; lengthen it to arrive later. Moving the whole note changes the start time as well, which makes the comparison harder to hear.

The start and pitch interval stay fixed. Only the Slide-note duration changes between the quick and slow examples.

There is no mandatory drill setting in milliseconds or beats. A wide interval covered quickly feels different from a small movement over the same time. Choose the landing first, then adjust the journey. If you lengthen the Slide event, leave enough carrier duration and audible sample tail to reach its new end.

The Channel **SLIDE** knob is Portamento Time for the separate Mono/Porta approach. It is not the length control for this native Slide-note test. Keep those methods separate while learning them.

## Match colors and check more than pitch

Slide events act on their own color group. For a simple bass line, use one group for both the carrier and its target. In Note Properties, check Color; for selected existing notes, the Piano roll menu's **Edit → Change color** command applies the chosen group.

Matching color groups allow the slide to act on the carrier. The simplified symbols explain the relationship, not the exact Note Properties layout.

The target also carries velocity, pan and modulation properties. A lower Slide-note velocity can make the bass quieter as it bends; a different pan or filter-related value can change its placement or tone. Match those values for the first test, then use changes deliberately. Mod X and Mod Y can have different destinations in native instruments, so do not assume they always mean the same filter controls.

If several ordinary notes overlap in the same group, a Slide event can move the chord together, using its highest note as the pitch reference. Diagnose an 808 with just one carrier before layering voices. Colors are processing groups here, not merely decoration.

## Try a slide up and back down

Here is a small timing exercise, not a required drill pattern. In 4/4, count four quarter-note beats. Use a tuned sample with enough audible tail for the exercise, and choose a register you can hear clearly.

Keep all three events in the same color group. The first target bends upward over one beat; the second bends back over the next. A Slide event does not automatically snap the carrier back when it ends. Add the return event when you want that movement. At the original pitch row, the return event may sit over the carrier: inspect the selected note's Slide flag rather than assuming every visible rectangle is a new hit.

C4 and C5 are example Piano roll labels, one octave apart—not a recommendation that every sample belongs in that register. Transpose the whole test if needed. Once it works, shorten the events or move the gesture toward the end of a phrase. ## Use native Mono or Porta as an alternative

For the ordinary-note method, remove the test's Slide events, open **Miscellaneous Channel Settings → Polyphony**, enable Mono and overlap two ordinary notes in the same color group. Adjust SLIDE to change transition time. Image-Line's [Channel polyphony and Gate reference](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/chansettings%5Fmisc.htm?ref=flstudiopro.com) distinguishes this from MAX: setting MAX to 1 is not a substitute for Mono.

Mono operates separately for note-color groups; different groups can therefore produce more than one voice overall. Keep a single group for the bass test. The manual also distinguishes Mono's release behavior from MAX cutting excess voices, so “one voice” is not a promise of an instantly silent release tail.

Porta enables Channel portamento. A Piano roll Portamento flag is another per-note transition control, not a silent target event whose rectangle sets a custom glide duration. Leave Porta and those flags out of the basic Mono test. These host controls are for supported native instruments, not third-party VST/AU plugins; some native instruments also lack the required pitch-bend support.

## Make a third-party plugin glide

Image-Line's [VST Slide-note limitation](https://support.image-line.com/action/knowledgebase?ans=592&ref=flstudiopro.com) is explicit: native Piano roll Slide notes are not supported. Turning on FL Studio's Channel Mono or Porta does not turn them into supported VST instructions.

Use the instrument's controls or a pitch-bend route it supports. These are conceptual paths, not a shared settings panel for every plugin.

In Serum, Vital or another third-party instrument, check that plugin's manual for its own mono/legato and glide or portamento controls. Names, retrigger behavior and whether notes must overlap vary. Use ordinary MIDI notes for that route. There is no shared knob value that makes every instrument behave identically.

If the instrument responds to pitch bend, Channel Pitch automation is another option. Confirm the bend range in both FL Studio and the instrument, audition the destination, and return the automation to neutral before the next unbent note. Do not assume a maximum knob position means an octave.

The [Wrapper's Send pitch bend range option](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/plugins/wrapper.htm?ref=flstudiopro.com) only helps plugins that understand that message. It is off by default because some plugins misinterpret it. Do not enable it blindly as a universal fix. If the instrument has neither suitable glide nor usable pitch bend, a sufficiently long rendered one-shot loaded into Sampler is a different workflow; preserve the original instrument first.

## When the sound ends before the slide

Check three separate limits: the ordinary note, the Volume envelope and the sample itself. A long rectangle does not guarantee a long sound. A conceptual comparison of separate duration limits: a long note or envelope cannot restore sound that has already decayed. Check Gate as well.

For deliberate note-length control, enable the [Sampler Volume envelope](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/chansettings%5Fins.htm?ref=flstudiopro.com). Sustain sets a level; Release sets the fade after release. They do not manufacture extra audio after a one-shot has decayed. Use a suitable sustain level and a short release as a starting point, then listen for clicks or unwanted tails rather than copying an all-knobs-zero preset.

Under Miscellaneous Channel Settings → Time, Gate can shorten note events. Fully clockwise disables that Gate limit. Change it only in your test Channel, then replay. Also check whether another Channel in a Cut group is sending note-off messages to the 808.

For a short sample, the simplest repair is often a longer source or a shorter bend. Sampler loop points can repeat a chosen region while the note is held, but badly matched boundaries can click or change the character. Keep the original file, audition the loop, and remember that manual Sampler loop settings are saved with the project rather than written into the source sample.

## Fix the symptom you actually hear

## Fit the slide into the beat

A slide earns its place when the arrival matters: a chord change, an answer to the melody or a turn at the end of a phrase. Keep some notes steady so that movement has contrast.
