- Description: Switch on colorful waveforms, change their frequency colors in the theme, and recolor clips, channels, Mixer tracks and notes without breaking MIDI channels.

To make waveforms colorful in FL Studio, open Options > General settings and, in the Display section, switch on Colorful waveforms, then choose Color map or Multiband. Reds show the low end, such as bass and the sustain of a kick, and blues show the highs, such as transients and cymbals. To change which color goes with which frequency, open Options > Theme (F10) and edit the Waves color picker. The option arrived in FL Studio 21.1, so older versions don’t have it.

I’d turn it on and leave it on: it shows you what a sample holds before you play it. Clip, track, channel, Mixer and note colors are separate controls with their own menus, and the second half of this guide covers each of them, plus the usual reasons a note refuses to change color.

## Turn on colorful waveforms

Image-Line added colored waveforms in [FL Studio 21.1](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-news/fl-studio-211-whats-new?ref=flstudiopro.com) as a General settings option that color codes the frequency content in audio waveforms, applied to the Browser, Playlist, Sampler Channel and other waveform previews.

1. Open Options > General settings from the main menu.
2. Find Colorful waveforms in the Display section.
3. Choose Color map or Multiband. Waveform previews in the Browser, Playlist and Sampler channel now show frequency colors.

The two modes read the audio differently. The [General settings manual page](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/envsettings%5Fgeneral.htm?ref=flstudiopro.com) describes them like this:

| Mode | How it picks the color | Where I’d use it |
| --------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------- |
| Color map | Calculates colors from the ‘average’ frequency content of the audio at any given time | Single sounds: kicks, bass notes, one-shots |
| Multiband | Uses a multi-band analysis, so loud highs don’t tint the whole clip blue while lows are still present | Full loops, drum breaks and bounced mixes |

I’d go with Multiband. On a drum loop with busy hi-hats, Color map can lean toward blue even though the kick is still there, and Multiband is built to avoid exactly that. Color map is the simpler read when you only scan one-shots in the Browser.

![Diagram of FL Studio colorful waveforms: an audio clip shaded red in the low-frequency kick and bass parts and blue in the high-frequency cymbal parts, with the path Options General settings Display Colorful waveforms, the two modes Color map and Multiband, and Theme Waves for editing the colors](https://storage.ghost.io/c/23/d1/23d1461e-9a6f-4583-9f0a-3ee044fc8192/content/images/2026/10/waveform-colors.webp)

Red marks the low end and blue the highs; the theme’s Waves picker changes that mapping.

If a colored waveform is hard to read against the clip body, change the clip shading. In the Playlist menu, View > Behind clips offers Nothing, Plain, Cel, Glass, Aqua, Solid and Shadow; Nothing makes clips transparent, so only the waveform carries color.

For a closer look at one sample, right-click its waveform preview in the channel settings and choose Spectrum view. According to the [audio clip manual page](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/playlist%5Faudioclip.htm?ref=flstudiopro.com), that view plots 20 Hz to 20 kHz on the vertical axis, with brightness showing how strong each frequency is. It replaces the waveform, so it suits a quick frequency check, not everyday arranging.

## Change the waveform colors in the theme

The frequency-to-color mapping lives in the theme, not in General settings. Open Options > Theme (F10) and find the Waves color picker. The [Theme settings manual page](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/envsettings%5Fthemes.htm?ref=flstudiopro.com) gives two moves:

- **Set colors:** click a Frequency tab and adjust the color to the right.
- **Scale colors:** select the Frequency tabs and drag vertically to change the scaling of the selected color.

These colors only show when Colorful waveforms is switched on in General settings. That’s the trap in a short [Image-Line forum thread](https://forum.image-line.com/viewtopic.php?t=335784&ref=flstudiopro.com): a user set new colors in the theme’s waveform editor, saw no change anywhere, and the answer was General Settings > Display > Colorful waveforms.

Two more theme switches matter here. “Audio and automation clips use note colors” bases automatic Audio and Automation Clip colors on the note color palette. And note colors, the Playlist and Piano roll grid color and the View > Background settings are saved along with the theme, so I’d click Save preset before you start experimenting. Changing the whole interface tint, wallpaper and theme presets is a bigger job, and our [guide to the FL Studio background and theme](https://flstudiopro.com/fl-studio-background/) covers it.

## Color tracks and clips in the Playlist

Right-click the header at the front of any Playlist track and choose Rename/color. Left-click the color square to open the color selector, or right-click it to get a random color from a palette the [Playlist manual](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/playlist.htm?ref=flstudiopro.com) calls “pre-approved by the Image-Line Aesthetics Committee”. With the name box open, F2 picks a random color and F3 repeats the last used color.

The same track menu has the time-savers:

- **Auto name** names and colors the track after the first Pattern Clip in it.
- **Auto name clips** renames and recolors every clip on the track to match the track’s name and color.
- **Auto color group** gives every track in a group the color of the track you right-clicked.
- **Reset** returns the track’s color, name and icon to the defaults. The Playlist menu’s Reset empty playlist tracks does the same for every unused track.

For single clips, open the clip menu, the small icon at the top-left corner of the clip, and pick Change color or Rename and recolor. To recolor many clips at once, open the Picker Panel with Alt/Opt+P, Ctrl+click the clips you want, and use Rename, Recolor or Gradient Recolor. The Picker Panel can also sort clips by color, which makes a big arrangement easier to scan; our [FL Studio Playlist guide](https://flstudiopro.com/fl-studio-playlist/) covers its other jobs.

Pattern clips take their color from one of three sources, picked with the options below the Pattern icon in the Playlist:

- **Note** uses the pattern’s note colors from the Piano roll. Event data defaults to pink.
- **Chan** uses the parent channel’s color from the Channel Rack.
- **Pat** uses the pattern’s own color.

I’d set this to Chan if you color your Channel Rack carefully, because then a bass pattern in the Playlist shows the same color as the bass channel. If you use Track Mode, which links a Channel, a Playlist track and a Mixer track, a change to the name, color or icon of one ripples through all three. Our [project organization guide](https://flstudiopro.com/fl-studio-project-organization/) shows how to build a whole color system on top of that.

![Four-panel map of FL Studio color controls: Playlist track header right-click Rename/color with F2 random and F3 last color, Channel Rack select channels then Color selected and Gradient, Mixer track label right-click Rename/color with F2, and Piano roll select notes then Alt+C Change color](https://storage.ghost.io/c/23/d1/23d1461e-9a6f-4583-9f0a-3ee044fc8192/content/images/2026/10/where-colors.webp)

Each window has its own color menu; Track Mode links the Playlist, Channel Rack and Mixer colors.

## Color channels in the Channel Rack

Right-click a channel button and choose Rename, recolor and icon. Left-click the color square to pick a color or right-click it for a random one; F2 and F3 work the same way as in the Playlist.

To color a whole section in one go, select the channels by dragging down the channel selectors, then open the Channel options menu and choose Channels > Color selected > Gradient. The [Channel Rack manual](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/channelrack.htm?ref=flstudiopro.com) says you pick a start and an end color and the selected channels are colored in sequence between them. Random is the other option in that menu.

Two related settings: Sort by > Color reorders channels from red at the top through green, blue and indigo to violet at the bottom, and Colorful loop controls makes the advanced looping controls take on the channel button’s color. A red channel button is not a color choice at all: it means FL Studio can’t find that channel’s sample or instrument. More Channel Rack housekeeping is in our [Channel Rack guide](https://flstudiopro.com/fl-studio-channel-rack/).

## Color Mixer tracks

Middle-click a Mixer track label, or right-click it and choose Rename / color, or select the track and press F2\. In the rename box, F2 again picks a random color. The Mixer menu has the same command under Mixer Track > Rename, color & icon, and the [Mixer menu manual page](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/mixer%5Fmixermenu.htm?ref=flstudiopro.com) adds a catch: for a selection of tracks, the name and icon only apply to unnamed tracks.

How much of each track takes the color is a view setting. Mixer menu > View > Colorful mixer offers Off, Low, Medium or High saturation for full-height track coloring; with Off, only the top part of the track is colored. I’d use Low: the tracks are easy to tell apart and the color doesn’t fight the meters. If you link instrument channels to Mixer tracks in Track Mode, the channel color follows. See our [FL Studio mixer guide](https://flstudiopro.com/fl-studio-mixer/) for routing and the rest of the Mixer layout.

## Change note colors in the Piano roll

Click the Piano roll’s note color selector and pick one of the 16 color groups; every note you draw from then on uses that color. Right-click the selector to customize the colors themselves.

To recolor notes you’ve already drawn:

1. Pick the target color in the color selector.
2. Select the notes you want to change.
3. Open the Piano roll menu and choose Edit > Change color, or press Alt/Opt+C.

The [Piano roll menu page](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/pianoroll%5Fmenu.htm?ref=flstudiopro.com) has one warning you should know before step 3: if nothing is selected, Change color applies to all notes. To recolor a single note, double-click it to open Note properties and click Color there. If that note is part of a selection, the change applies to every selected note.

Three helpers round this out. Shift+C selects every note and slide that has the color currently chosen in the selector. View > Note colors > Edit palette lets you change the 16 colors and save them as a .ncp preset in Documents\\Image-Line\\FL Studio\\Presets\\Note color presets. And View > Grid color (Ctrl/Cmd+Alt/Opt+G) changes the grid behind the notes. Everything else in the editor is in our [FL Studio piano roll guide](https://flstudiopro.com/fl-studio-piano-roll/).

![Piano roll diagram with a row of 16 note-color swatches above the grid, notes in green, orange and purple, and callouts: select notes then Alt+C to change color, double-click a note to set Color in Note properties, each color is a MIDI channel for plugins in the Wrapper, and a slide note only bends notes of its own color](https://storage.ghost.io/c/23/d1/23d1461e-9a6f-4583-9f0a-3ee044fc8192/content/images/2026/10/note-colors.webp)

Note colors are also groups: they set MIDI channels, slide groups and mono groups.

## What note colors change besides the look

Note colors in FL Studio are working groups, not just paint. The [Piano roll manual](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/pianoroll.htm?ref=flstudiopro.com) lists what they control:

- **MIDI channels.** Each color is locked to a particular MIDI channel for plugins hosted by the Wrapper. Hover over a color in the selector and the hint bar shows its channel number.
- **Slides.** A slide note bends only the notes of its own color, so up to 16 notes can slide in different directions at once. That’s how separate 808 glides stay apart, as our [808 slides guide](https://flstudiopro.com/fl-studio-808-slides/) shows step by step.
- **Mono mode.** With Mono switched on in the channel’s polyphony settings, it applies to each color group separately, so four colors can still give four voices at once.
- **Recording.** To record incoming MIDI channels from a controller to their matching note colors, right-click the instrument’s Channel Rack button and switch on MIDI channel through.
- **Special functions.** Some plugins, including Harmless, Harmor and Slicex, use note colors for their own features.

That’s why recoloring notes can change what a multitimbral plugin plays. I’d keep one color for one part unless you mean to use slides or MIDI channels. If your parts come from a MIDI file, our [MIDI import guide](https://flstudiopro.com/fl-studio-import-midi/) shows how they land in the Channel Rack before you start recoloring.

## Note color not changing? Check these first

- **You clicked a color with notes selected and nothing happened.** The color selector only sets the color for notes you draw next. A user reported the same thing on the [Image-Line forum](https://forum.image-line.com/viewtopic.php?t=340056&ref=flstudiopro.com): picking a color with a note selected did nothing, while double-clicking the note and using its dialog worked. Select the notes and press Alt/Opt+C instead.
- **Every note changed color.** Change color ran with nothing selected, which applies it to all notes. Undo, select the notes you meant, and run it again.
- **Some notes are grey and won’t recolor.** Those are ghost notes from other channels in the same pattern. Double right-click a ghost note to switch to its channel and recolor it there, or see our [ghost notes guide](https://flstudiopro.com/fl-studio-ghost-notes/).
- **The plugin plays differently after a recolor.** The new color sent those notes to another MIDI channel. FL Studio has no setting to separate the two; a [forum thread asking for exactly that](https://forum.image-line.com/viewtopic.php?t=328566&ref=flstudiopro.com) was answered “No, its a long time request”. If you only want visual organization, put the parts in separate patterns and color those instead.
- **The Playlist clip ignores your note colors.** The clip’s color source is set to Chan or Pat. Switch it to Note below the Pattern icon in the Playlist.
- **All the clips on a track changed color at once.** Auto name clips recolors every clip on the track to the track’s color. Use Change color on individual clips afterwards.

## Quick answers

### How do I make waveforms colorful in FL Studio?

Open Options > General settings, find Colorful waveforms in the Display section and choose Color map or Multiband. You need FL Studio 21.1 or later.

### Why don’t my theme waveform colors show?

The Waves colors in Options > Theme only display when Colorful waveforms is switched on in General settings.

### What do the colors on colorful waveforms mean?

By default, reds are low frequencies such as bass and kick sustain, and blues are high frequencies such as transients and cymbals.

### How do I change the color of FL Studio 25?

For the whole interface, open Options > Theme (F10) and adjust Hue, Saturation and the color pickers, or load a theme. For a track, channel or Mixer track, use its Rename/color box (F2). For notes, select them and press Alt/Opt+C.

### How do I change the piano roll note color?

Click the Color selector and pick one of the 16 colors, select the notes and press Alt/Opt+C, or double-click one note and set Color in Note properties.

### Does note color affect the sound?

It can. For plugins in the Wrapper each color is a MIDI channel, slides only bend notes of the same color, and Mono mode works per color group.

## My verdict

Turn on Colorful waveforms in Multiband mode first; it’s one setting and it makes every sample easier to read in the Browser and Playlist. Then pick one coloring habit and stick to it: I’d color the Channel Rack, set Playlist pattern clips to Chan, and let Track Mode carry the same colors to the Mixer. Treat note colors as groups, not decoration, because they decide MIDI channels, slides and mono voices. When a recolor doesn’t take, the answer is nearly always selection: select the notes, then press Alt/Opt+C.
