These routes solve different buying problems. Rent-to-Own spreads the cost rather than reducing it.

## Student pricing saves money but changes the license

The [academic licensing page](https://www.image-line.com/academic-educational-licenses?ref=flstudiopro.com) offers a personal Signature Bundle license to qualifying students and teachers through third-party resellers, which verify eligibility. Institutional multi-seat licenses are a separate arrangement for institution-owned computers, not a discounted personal license students take away from class.

The feature set is not cut down, but the usage rights are different. Image-Line’s [academic-versus-full license explanation](https://support.image-line.com/action/knowledgebase?ans=379&ref=flstudiopro.com) says academic Signature Bundle has the same features as regular Signature Bundle and cannot be used commercially. It lists a $49 USD conversion to a full license, available in the personalized shop after registration. Treat that as the documented conversion price checked on September 12, 2026; confirm your actual checkout total before budgeting for commercial releases or client work.

Academic licenses include Lifetime Free Updates. Those updates do not remove the noncommercial restriction. ## Existing owners should price the upgrade while signed in

Under Image-Line’s [edition upgrade policy](https://support.image-line.com/action/knowledgebase?ans=123&ref=flstudiopro.com), the normal upgrade is based on the current shop-price difference between your owned edition and the higher edition, in local currency including sales tax. This is not a refund of whatever you originally spent. Sale pricing can break that usual parity, so use the signed-in quote rather than subtracting two promotional banners.

## Verify the reseller and the code separately

A used key or someone else’s account is therefore not a substitute for a new license. If a shop supplies an already-used serial, its guidance is to request a refund or replacement from the seller. ## Rent-to-Own spreads payments but costs more overall

The [current pricing page](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio/pricing?ref=flstudiopro.com) describes Rent-to-Own Plus as 12 payments leading to a perpetual FL Studio license with Lifetime Free Updates; FL Cloud continues until cancelled. Availability can vary by region. More importantly, the [Rent-to-Own FAQ](https://support.image-line.com/action/knowledgebase?ans=1012&ref=flstudiopro.com) explicitly says it costs more than buying outright. Choose it for cash flow, not because a smaller monthly number looks like a discount.

Before enrolling, compare the full plan total and read the [Rent-to-Own terms](https://www.image-line.com/rent-to-own?ref=flstudiopro.com). Cancelling before completion does not leave you with a perpetual license: after the current billing cycle, FL Studio returns to trial mode. The support FAQ also says you must finish the plan before upgrading editions. If you later restart, check its same-account and activity conditions rather than assuming credit lasts unconditionally.

FL Cloud is a separate renewal to watch, including a free period bundled with a purchase. Review the subscription in your account; do not assume buying a perpetual DAW license means every attached service stops billing.

## Calculate the real total, not the badge

Compare the same edition and usage rights. Record the amount payable now, then any later costs you expect to incur. If VAT is already included, do not add it again. Check currency conversion and payment fees with your payment provider. Add a commercial-license conversion only when the academic route needs it, and budget separately for optional plugins or subscriptions. Seller reliability is a separate decision—not a number to invent and add to the bill.
