# Edison in FL Studio: Record, Edit and Export Audio

Edison is FL Studio’s audio recorder and waveform editor. Use it to capture a short performance, cut a sample precisely, add fades or regions, and send the edited audio back to your project. For a first session, the useful order is simple: choose the source, record or load it, protect the original, select the part you need, then check the exported result.

The recording point and the destination deserve as much attention as the edit. An Edison instance below a reverb records that reverb; its send button can either create an Audio Clip or replace a selected source, depending on how you click it. This guide walks through those decisions before you commit a take.

## Check your edition and choose the right recording tool

The current [Image-Line edition comparison](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio/pricing?ref=flstudiopro.com) includes Edison in Producer Edition and above. External audio recording also requires Producer or higher. If you are using the standard time-unlimited Trial, you can save projects and export audio, but you cannot reopen saved projects until purchase and unlock. Choose Edison when one recording or sample needs close attention: a vocal phrase, a drum hit, a short resample or a loop whose edges need work. Choose Playlist disk recording for a long performance or a session with many visible takes. Edison keeps its working audio in RAM, so it is not the place to leave an interview recording for hours.

Choose the job your sample needs. Repair is optional; a clean recording may need nothing more than a careful selection and export.

## Record, edit and export one sample in eight steps

1. **Choose the source.** Decide whether to open an existing file or capture audio reaching a particular Mixer track.
2. **Protect the original.** Keep an untouched file with a distinct name. If a Playlist clip needs its own source file, use Make unique as sample before changing that file.
3. **Place Edison deliberately.** For recording, load it into the chosen Mixer effect slot, before or after the effects you intend to capture. For file editing, load the intended sample into Edison.
4. **Check the recording controls.** For a new capture, verify the input, monitoring, start mode and For duration. Make a short test, stop recording and listen before the full take.
5. **Save the raw capture.** After recording, disable Edison Record and save the unedited audio under a separate raw filename.
6. **Select and edit.** Select the exact range, audition its start and tail, then trim or process only what the sound needs.
7. **Choose the destination.** Send a new Audio Clip to the Playlist, drag-copy to a compatible target, replace a verified selected source or save a separately named file.
8. **Check the handoff.** Audition the destination in context, verify the first transient and tail, and save the project with its required samples. In standard Trial, do not close needed work expecting to reopen the project before purchase.

## Open Edison for a sample or for a Mixer recording

For the least ambiguous recording route, select the intended Mixer track and load Edison into an empty effect slot. You can see exactly where it sits. - **Editing a Sampler file:** with the Sampler Channel as your context, `Ctrl+E` opens its sample for editing. This is not a universal shortcut for every instrument’s generated sound.
- **Preparing a Mixer capture:** select the Mixer track and press `Shift+E`. Edison loads into the first empty FX slot with host-slaved playback and `On play` recording enabled. Check that first empty slot: it may be below effects already on the track.
- **Opening an existing audio file:** use `File > Load sample` inside Edison, or drag the file into its waveform area. A Playlist Audio Clip’s `Edit sample` command opens the configured sample editor.

Loading a source file is not the same as recording its current sound in the song. Mixer effects are captured by recording at the appropriate Mixer position, not merely by opening the original WAV. ## Choose what reaches the Edison slot

Mixer effects run from the upper slots toward the lower slots. Edison captures audio at its own slot, before the track fader. Put it before the effects you want to leave out, or after the effects you want to print. Moving the track fader does not change the level being recorded by that Edison instance.

For a microphone or instrument, “dry” here means before those FL Studio effects. It does not remove processing already applied by external hardware or an interface’s incoming DSP path. Set the source and input gain correctly before recording. The capture branches begin at Edison, not at the speakers. Effects after Edison can still change what you hear while its recorded audio remains before those effects.

### Check the live-input path separately from disk recording

Edison records an FX-slot signal; the Mixer’s `EXT` disk-recording pickup is not its capture selector. For a straightforward headphone-monitored Edison session, choose the correct Mixer input, set `Monitor external input > On`, leave Edison’s `Mute input` unmuted and avoid a second direct-monitor feed from the interface. Keep speakers down so the microphone cannot feed back.

Do not carry an earlier Playlist direct-monitor setup into Edison without checking that audio actually reaches the plugin.

Record a short test in `Now` mode, disable Edison Record and listen. Confirm the wanted source is present and the beat is absent unless you intend to capture it. For Edison-only recording, leave the Mixer’s disk-record arm off rather than accidentally creating a second recording. ### Do not apply an effect twice while judging the recording

Playing audio from Edison still sends it through effects that follow that slot. If you need to hear the captured file without those extra effects, bypass them for the comparison, then restore your intended listening chain. A printed reverb followed by another pass through reverb is not a fair check of the saved sound.

## Choose Now, On input, Input or On play

With Edison Record armed, the start selector determines how capture behaves. Choose it for the performance, not just because it was used in another tutorial.

- `Now` starts immediately. It is an uncomplicated choice for a short test or a capture you will trim afterward.
- `On input` waits for audio to cross the threshold, then continues recording. Edison uses a pre-record buffer to preserve the opening transient; you do not need a separate loud trigger sound.
- `Input` pauses during silence and resumes when input returns. Avoid it when quiet gaps must keep their original duration.
- `On play` starts from FL Studio’s main playback transport and adds song-start markers when playback starts/stops or the Playlist loops.

Check a quiet phrase in a test rather than assuming the same threshold suits speech, a guitar and a noisy room.

On input waits for a trigger and then continues; Input can pause during quiet passages. After an On play capture, stop FL Studio and disable Edison Record before auditioning.

### Stop the recorder, not just playback

When the take is finished, turn off Edison’s Record button. In an `On play` session, stop the main FL Studio transport as well. Do both before starting playback to review a take. ## Set For before an important take

The `For` control is a recording-buffer choice, not a promise to stop safely and keep every minute. Its finite settings offer **1–60 minutes** or **50 MB–1 GB**. Once that limit is reached, Edison wraps and overwrites earlier recorded audio. `Ever` is limited by available memory; it does not turn Edison into disk recording.

Save audio you want to keep before recording over it. If the job is a long interview, rehearsal or concert, use Playlist disk recording and bring only the sections needing detailed edits into Edison. A larger finite buffer can postpone overwrite, but it is not an archive.

Minutes and file-size settings can wrap over earlier audio. Ever still depends on available RAM, and editing needs additional memory. Save useful captures separately.

## Keep the source file, Edison edit and Playlist clip distinct

Opening a sample in Edison gives you working audio to edit. Do not assume each trim has already overwritten the disk file—or that another Playlist clip now contains your edited result. The handoff happens when you save, send or replace audio.

For an Audio Clip that needs an independent file, the [Playlist’s copy commands](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/playlist.htm?ref=flstudiopro.com) distinguish two cases: `Make unique` creates a separate clip source while reusing the original audio file; `Make unique as sample` also copies that file on disk. Use the latter before intentionally changing a file that other clips should not share.

Keep names such as `vocal-take-03-raw.wav` and `vocal-take-03-edit.wav`. Before saving, check the path and filename; overwriting the only raw file defeats that separation. Before replacing a selected Audio Clip or Sampler, check which source is selected and where it is used. Undo is useful for experimentation, but it is not a substitute for keeping the raw capture.

## Select the range before cutting or pasting

In waveform edit mode, left-drag horizontally over the audio you want to work on. Zoom into both boundaries and listen to the transition. Keep a little context until you know that the breath, attack or decay outside the obvious waveform peak is expendable.

For precise paste placement, start a small selection at the intended insertion point. Its start determines where the paste begins; its length does not limit how much clipboard audio is pasted. - `Ctrl+V`, Paste insert: inserts the clipboard audio at the selection start and moves the existing audio at and after that point later.
- `Alt+V`, Paste replace: writes the clipboard audio from the selection start over the existing audio. It does not shift the later material, but it can overwrite beyond a small destination selection because the clipboard’s duration determines the affected length.

In this example, five seconds pasted at 10 seconds moves a reference transient from 20 to 25 seconds with insert. Replace writes over 10–15 seconds and leaves that later transient at 20.

### Clear, Delete and Trim solve different problems

`Edit > Clear` silences the selected range without shortening the sample. `Edit > Delete` removes it and reduces the length. `Edit > Trim` removes the audio outside the selection. If timing matters, decide whether you want silence, a shorter file or just the selected excerpt before choosing the command.

## Use fades and processing only where they help

A short fade can soften a click at an edit boundary, but a long fade can weaken a drum’s attack. Preview the result at normal speed and in the song. Edison's [editing buttons](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/plugins/Edison%5F4.htm?ref=flstudiopro.com) also distinguish left-click fades from right-click declick operations; those are not interchangeable gestures.

### Normalize is peak scaling, not a finished mix

`Tools > Amp > Normalize` scales the waveform so its highest sample reaches the maximum level. It does not remove background noise, repair clipped peaks or even out every word in a performance. A louder sample may simply be a louder version of the same problem.

### Click-free editing still needs listening

The [Click free editing switch](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/plugins/Edison%5F11.htm?ref=flstudiopro.com) adds short fades around selected, cut and processed regions. Listen especially closely to sharp attacks. A zero crossing can reduce a boundary discontinuity, but neither the switch nor the waveform tells you whether a consonant has been cut in half.

### Keep noise removal a separate decision

A gate silences audio below a threshold; a denoiser uses a noise profile to reduce steady background noise within the wanted recording. Strong denoising can remove useful detail. ## Use markers, regions and loop points deliberately

A marker identifies one position; a region adds an end boundary. Loop points identify a range for repeated playback, while a downbeat marker helps rhythmic placement. These are different jobs, even when they appear over the same waveform.

Name a phrase by meaning—“verse double clean” is easier to find later than “Region 5.” Preview its boundaries before exporting it.

A marker identifies a position, while a region has a start and an end. This simplified waveform also separates loop points from a close-up zero-crossing check.

## Send or save the result without replacing the wrong source

Make and audition the intended selection first. The send button’s left-click and drag-copy use the whole sample when no selection is made, so check the highlighted range before the handoff.

- **New Playlist Audio Clip:** left-click `Send sample to Playlist`, or use `Tools > Sequencing > Send to Playlist as audio clip` (`Shift+C` with Edison focused).
- **Compatible destination:** left-drag the `Drag / copy sample / move selection` button to the intended Playlist location or compatible sampler target. Confirm the target rather than dropping over an existing source by habit.
- **Replace an existing source:** right-click the send button to replace the selected Audio Clip or Sampler Channel with Edison’s sample or selection. The `Send to selected channel` sequencing command is also a selected-target handoff, not a promise of a new independent channel.
- **Separate named file:** choose `File > Save sample as`, check the destination and select the format. Use an uncompressed Microsoft WAV for an ordinary editing handoff; inspect the chosen bit depth and sample rate instead of assuming the source format survived processing unchanged.

Choose a destination deliberately. Right-clicking the send button replaces a selected source; saving under the raw file’s name can overwrite it. Check both before committing.

Audition the destination, not just the Edison window. Check the first transient, the tail and the level in context. If a rhythmic file behaves unexpectedly after a tempo change, inspect its tempo properties with `F2`; markers alone are not a complete tempo-sync setup.

## Budget memory and keep the project’s samples together

Edison works in RAM, and editing may need up to four times the sample’s memory. Image-Line’s overview recommends samples no larger than about 500 MB; its recording guidance also advises leaving enough free memory for the editing overhead. That is guidance, not a guarantee that every machine can safely edit a 500 MB file.

For project organization, the [Project Data Folder options](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/songsettings%5Fsettings.htm?ref=flstudiopro.com) can collect recordings and dragged Edison edits. Imported samples can remain at their original locations unless you explicitly copy or package them. Verify the actual files you need, not just the folder name.

The [FLP format reference](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/fformats%5Fopen%5Fflp.htm?ref=flstudiopro.com) warns that external wave samples are not included in the project file itself. Save your edited audio as well as the project. Standard Trial still cannot reopen a saved project before purchase, so complete the needed exports in the open session.

## Troubleshoot Edison by the stage that failed

### The recording contains the whole beat

Check whether Edison is on the Master or on a bus receiving the arrangement. Move the capture to the intended source insert and inspect incoming routes. Changing a disk pickup to EXT does not change Edison's FX-slot capture point.

### On input never starts, or Edison receives nothing

First verify the input and the signal reaching Edison, including monitoring and its Mute input control. Then try a short Now-mode test. If that works, investigate the threshold. If the live source never reaches FL Studio, use the [microphone input checklist](https://flstudiopro.com/fl-studio-microphone-not-working/) rather than randomly changing Edison effects.

### Quiet gaps disappear or the beginning is missing

Check two different settings: `Input` can pause during silence, while a finite `For` buffer can overwrite earlier recording after wrapping. Those are not the same fault. Stop and preserve what remains; do not promise that an overwritten beginning is recoverable.

### A paste moved the following audio

Undo the insert. If replacement is intended, start the selection at the required point and use Paste replace, checking the full clipboard duration before overwriting anything.

### Other clips changed, or the old audio still plays

Check the clip’s selected source and whether you actually sent or saved the edited audio. Shared clip sources, a replaced Sampler and an overwritten disk file are different possibilities. Compare them with your raw copy before making another replacement.

### An exported slice clicks

Audition both edges, move the boundary where musically appropriate and try a short fade. Check it against the next sound in the Playlist. Normalizing or denoising is not a substitute for fixing a poor edit boundary.
