# FL Studio Gain Staging: Source, Effects and Master

**Gain staging in FL Studio means controlling the level at each point in the signal path.** Turn down the source when an effect is receiving too much level; use the Mixer fader to balance the processed sound. Then listen to the buses and Master with the whole arrangement playing. You do not need every track to peak at −18, −12 or −6 dBFS.

The question to ask is: *where does the unwanted change first happen?* A harsh compressor input, a loud but clean floating-point mix and a clipped microphone recording are three different problems. Moving the same fader will not solve all three.

## Gain-stage the mix in eight decisions

1. **Check the route.** Confirm which Mixer Insert receives each source, including any bus or parallel send.
2. **Choose an early control.** Use Clip Gain, an instrument output or a trim before the effect that needs a different input level.
3. **Play a demanding section.** Include loud notes, overlapping drums and phrase peaks rather than judging one quiet moment.
4. **Check one effect at a time.** Work down the slots, compare bypassed and processed sound, and compensate unintended output jumps.
5. **Correct accidental drive upstream.** Reduce the level before the processor causing unwanted distortion or excessive compression.
6. **Balance after processing.** Use the Mixer fader to place the completed sound in the song.
7. **Recheck shared paths.** Listen to buses, sends and automation after significant level changes.
8. **Check the output.** Keep playback and fixed-point exports below clipping; distinguish Master output level from the signal feeding its effects.

Repeat the relevant checks after an EQ boost, compressor makeup-gain change or routing edit. A tidy row of faders is not the goal; predictable sound is.

## Follow the signal, not the fader position

In the ordinary serial path, audio travels through effect slots from top to bottom, then through the integrated Track controls before leaving the Insert. Image-Line documents this order in [Effects Slots](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/mixer%5Fplugin.htm?ref=flstudiopro.com). The Mixer fader is after the effects. Lowering it cannot change what already entered a compressor in Slot 3.

Think of a snare: lower its input to a compressor if the transient is being crushed unintentionally; lower the fader if its processed tone is right but it dominates the chorus. The first changes the processing decision. The second changes the musical balance.

## What floating-point headroom protects

FL Studio's internal audio path uses at least 32-bit floating-point representation. An Insert above 0 dBFS is therefore not automatically a clipped waveform. Do not turn that into “nothing can distort inside the DAW.” A saturator may reshape the signal intentionally; a compressor's gain reduction depends on its input and settings. Plugins can have their own limits. Floating-point transport cannot undo an alteration that a processor has already made.

The practical boundaries are the recording input, any level-sensitive processing, and the eventual output. A 16- or 24-bit fixed-point file cannot retain over-full-scale peaks the way a floating-point file can. An Insert routed directly to hardware also needs an output check, even if the Master looks fine. Stay within readable meter ranges while you work; do not use internal headroom as a reason to ignore a wildly hot chain.

These qualitative waveforms separate three cases. Lowering the level later cannot undo distortion already created.

## Choose the source control

For one loud take or phrase in the Playlist, try the small Gain handle on the lower edge of its Audio Clip. Drag vertically. This affects that instance, unlike shared Channel Settings. Image-Line's [Audio Clip controls](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/playlist%5Faudioclip.htm?ref=flstudiopro.com) document a range from +36 dB down to silence. If the handle is hidden, enable the Playlist's fade-editing controls.

For an instrument, use its output or Channel Volume while watching the destination. Channel Volume is a message to the plugin, not universally an independent trim on its final audio. Native instruments can apply it to note voices; VST/AU instruments may handle it differently. Do not assume a knob percentage is a dBFS peak reading.

If you need an unambiguous level stage before Mixer effects, put Fruity Balance in a free slot before them and adjust **Volume**, leaving Balance centered unless you also intend to change stereo balance. Slot 1 is convenient, but position relative to the processor is what matters. Never replace a loaded effect just to obtain that slot; preserve the chain and insert or move controls deliberately.

For a microphone or guitar, set the interface input gain before recording. A software trim can lower playback but cannot restore information lost through converter clipping. ## Read levels without chasing −18

A peak meter tells you about short maximum levels, not how loud two sounds feel. A sustained bass and a sharp snare can share a peak value and have very different average levels. RMS averages the signal; VU responds more slowly. Neither is interchangeable with a peak target.

Load the meter at the point you want to inspect and keep its display Gain neutral, without a boost or cut. A meter before a fader will not report that fader's later attenuation.

Advice about −18 dBFS often concerns an average level or an analog-modelled plugin's calibration—not a compulsory peak for every kick and vocal. Check your processor's own reference level rather than copying a number into every track.

You can mix with stock controls and meters. A paid “gain staging” plugin is not a prerequisite, and equal peak readings are not evidence that a mix is balanced.

## Level-match effects one at a time

Loop the same passage for each comparison. Bypass one slot, listen, enable it, then use the processor's output or a suitable following trim to compensate an unintended jump. Judge the change at roughly comparable perceived loudness. Peaks may differ legitimately after compression; forcing them to match exactly can defeat the comparison.

Use the individual slot's disable switch, not the track's whole-FX bypass, when judging one processor. Keep track of other active processing. A later compressor can react differently to the change you are evaluating, so inspect the level immediately after the suspect slot as well as listening through the complete chain.

The slot's Wet/Dry control is not a substitute for output gain: it blends signals and can change the effect itself. An EQ boost, compressor makeup gain and saturator drive also do different jobs. Compare one effect at a time. The bars illustrate a level check; equal peaks alone do not prove equal perceived loudness.

If a saturator is harsh because its input is excessive, lower the source or a trim before it. If the drive sounds right at a fair comparison level, keep it and balance afterward. ## Keep faders and automation useful

Unity means 0 dB of gain: no boost or cut. It is not the same as a signal peaking at 0 dBFS. Unity is a convenient starting point, not a rule for the finished song. Move an Insert fader where the balance requires. If a tiny movement near its bottom makes the part jump, consider trimming earlier—but recheck any level-sensitive effects that the change now feeds.

Fader automation is valid. It simply means that automation is also controlling the position you might want to adjust later. An alternative is Fruity Balance after the tone-shaping effects for phrase rides or fades, leaving the Mixer fader free for broad balance changes.

A ride before a compressor changes its input and potentially its gain reduction. A ride after it changes the completed compressed signal. Choose which behavior you want; neither location is universally correct. Replay the actual automation after editing levels instead of assuming a static setting will stay put.

## Check buses, sends and double routes

The ordinary sends described in Image-Line's [Mixer routing reference](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/mixer.htm?ref=flstudiopro.com) are post-fader. Lowering the source fader lowers what those destinations receive. For a simple linear reverb path, direct and sent sound may fall together; it does not automatically mean the wet/dry ratio changes. Other sources, nonlinear return processing and automation can alter the result.

When routing several sounds through a bus, verify whether their direct Master routes are still enabled. An unintended direct path alongside the bus can duplicate the audible contribution. If parallel routing is intentional, keep it intentional—do not disable paths indiscriminately.

Link the destination and select it in Send to. Its Dry control defaults to 0%; turn it up to full pass-through if you also want the source to continue through its own track. Use a sidechain-only routing link for the destination when you do not want an additional ordinary post-fader audio send.

The lower route assumes Fruity Send's Dry allows pass-through. Source gain and earlier effects still change the extracted copy.

## Set Master level without a magic number

Play the full arrangement, including its loudest sections. Leave working room so the next level or EQ change does not immediately overload the output. There is no universal requirement for a premaster to peak at exactly −6 dBFS; follow the receiving engineer's specification if one was supplied.

If the summed signal is clean and only the final output is too high, lowering the Master fader is a valid level adjustment. If a Master compressor or saturator is being driven too hard, reduce the level **before that processor** instead. Do not flatten a carefully balanced mix by lowering arbitrary tracks just to avoid touching the Master. iZotope's [headroom explanation](https://www.izotope.com/community/blog/headroom-how-to-set-levels-mixing-and-mastering?ref=flstudiopro.com) also notes how automation and bus compression complicate late level changes.

The toolbar's [Monitor Volume](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/toolbar%5Fpanels.htm?ref=flstudiopro.com) adjusts listening level without changing renders. Turning the speakers down is not the same as turning the export down. Check a rendered file, too, rather than relying only on how loud playback feels.

A peak below 0 dBFS is a useful mixing check, not a promise that every delivery specification has been met.

## Recording level and pickup location

The [recording pickup selector](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/mixer%5Ftrackprops.htm?ref=flstudiopro.com) decides which point is recorded. EXT takes the interface input directly, so its recording level is controlled at the interface, not by the Insert fader. MIX includes external and routed Mixer inputs before the slots; FX records after them; EQ includes Track EQ; LVL adds Level and Pan; POST also includes the Track mute state.

If a new recording is distorted, listen to an unprocessed copy and inspect the interface input first. A flat-looking waveform alone does not identify the cause: the source may already be distorted or limited. When the input truly clipped, reduce hardware gain and record again where possible. Do not overwrite the original while investigating.

## Troubleshoot the first unwanted change

- **A plugin sounds crushed:** compare it bypassed, inspect its input and reduce earlier gain if the drive is unintended.
- **The Insert exceeds 0 dBFS:** inspect plugins and output routes before assuming the waveform is damaged.
- **The Master is hot but clean:** reduce final output, or trim before Master effects if their input needs reducing.
- **A bus makes the mix unexpectedly louder:** check duplicate direct routes and bus processing.
- **A pre-fader send makes the source disappear:** inspect Fruity Send's Dry pass-through and the source's routing.
- **The level changes again on playback:** check automation on the control you moved.

## FL Studio gain staging FAQ

### What level should every FL Studio track peak at?

There is no required peak for every track. Use levels that suit the source and downstream processors, then check the combined output with the full arrangement playing.

### Do I need to gain-stage every track to −18 dBFS?

No. Check whether a recommendation refers to average level, peak level or a particular plugin's calibration. Those are different things; −18 dBFS is not a universal per-track peak target.

### Is an Insert above 0 dBFS automatically clipped?

No. FL Studio's floating-point internal path can represent over-full-scale levels, but plugins may alter or limit the signal and hardware or fixed-point output can still clip.

### Should I use Channel Volume or the Mixer fader?

Use an earlier control to change what enters Mixer effects. Use the post-effect fader for final track balance. Channel Volume behavior depends on the instrument; an explicit trim before the effects may be clearer.

### Where should Fruity Balance go?

Put it before the processor whose input you want to change. For fades separate from Mixer balance, place it after the tone-shaping effects. Use its Volume control for level changes.

### Should bypassed and processed peaks match exactly?

Not necessarily. Compare the same passage at similar perceived loudness. Compression and other processing can change peaks without an equivalent change in how loud the sound feels.

### Can I lower the Master instead of every track?

Yes, when the summed signal is clean and you only need lower final output. The Master fader cannot undo distortion or excessive compression already produced by its effects or earlier processing.

### Must I leave exactly −6 dBFS before mastering?

No. Leave useful working room, avoid unintended distortion and follow any handoff specification. An exact −6 dBFS peak is not a universal mastering requirement.

### Why does lowering Monitor Volume not change my export?

Monitor Volume controls listening level, not rendered level. Adjust the mix or Master output as appropriate, then check the rendered file.
