# Harmor in FL Studio: First Patch and Resynthesis

**To learn Harmor in FL Studio, build one dry Part A patch before opening the resynthesis tools.** Choose a timbre, shape its volume envelope, set the filter, then add one kind of movement. Once that sound works in a short phrase, try unison and effects. You will hear what each change contributes instead of trying to untangle a finished preset.

Harmor's additive engine also turns audio into a playable spectrum. That opens up sample-based textures, time scrubbing and image synthesis, but brings two practical checks: whether your Harmor instance is licensed, and whether the project can still find its source audio. Both matter before you close a session.

## What Harmor is—and what it is not

Harmor builds sound from sine-wave components called partials. Each has a frequency, level and phase. The [Harmor manual](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/plugins/Harmor.htm?ref=flstudiopro.com) specifies up to 516 partials per note, per unison voice. Its familiar filter controls shape partial data before the engine produces audio; they do not turn it into an ordinary recorded-waveform oscillator followed by an analog-modelled filter.

You do not need to draw hundreds of partials. Start with a useful spectrum and change its shape. ### Check the license before relying on a patch

Image-Line's [current edition comparison](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio/compare?ref=flstudiopro.com) includes Harmor in All Plugins Edition, not Fruity, Producer or Signature Bundle. A separately owned Harmor license can change your entitlement. Seeing the plugin in the installation is not proof that it is unlocked.

There are two different trial restrictions. The FL Studio application trial lets you save projects, but reopening requires an FL Studio license. Separately, an unlicensed Harmor instance can be a trial plugin inside a paid edition. Under the [current trial-plugin rules](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/app%5Ffeature.htm?ref=flstudiopro.com), it is replaced by an empty channel when the project is reopened unless purchased and unlocked first. **Do not overwrite that reopened project with Harmor missing:** doing so loses the stored trial-plugin settings. Keep the original file and export an audio reference while the sound still plays.

This guide concerns Harmor inside desktop FL Studio. Old videos also show the separate VST version. Image-Line has [discontinued new VST plugin registrations](https://www.image-line.com/vst-downloads?ref=flstudiopro.com); previous owners can still access their registrations. Do not assume a current native Harmor entitlement supplies a newly purchasable standalone VST for another DAW.

## Read the interface as five working zones

Find the two Timbre windows and their MIX control at the top left. The filters sit at the top right. A/B selects the synthesis part you edit. The ENV, IMG, FX and ADV tabs change the lower working panel. The tall visual-feedback display at the right shows partials for the last note played; it is not a spectrum editor for the whole chord.

Find these five areas first. The illustrated layout follows Harmor's interface; the partial display lets you watch the last note, not edit it.

ENV holds modulation targets and their articulation sources, not just one envelope. IMG handles audio and image resynthesis. FX contains output effects, including distortion, chorus, delay, reverb and compression. ADV includes per-part unit order and global effect order. Treat the sequence in this guide as a learning order: Harmor's processing order is configurable, and its filters can interact in series or parallel.

Keep visual feedback open when it helps explain a change, then close it if the patch strains the processor. The manual specifically warns that the display itself is CPU-intensive. A busy spectrum does not tell you whether the part fits the song.

## Start from an initialized patch, not a finished demo

Add Harmor as an instrument and choose an initialized/default starting preset. Work on Part A, with Part B inactive and unnecessary effects off. Play a short phrase with a low note, a high note and a chord. This is a listening exercise, not a claim that one preset or octave suits every bass, lead or pad.

The default timbres are saw-like and square-like. In Fade mode, the Timbre MIX control blends them; it is not a separate oscillator-volume knob for Timbre 2\. Start at the Timbre 1 end of that blend, then listen as you introduce Timbre 2\. Set the part's pitch separately. Build the dry sound with these controls before adding layers or effects. This is a learning sequence, not Harmor's internal signal routing.

Send Harmor to a named Mixer insert and leave room for later effects. Compare changes at similar loudness: a level jump can disguise a worse tone. ## Shape partials with Timbre, filter, Prism and Harmonizer

Timbre establishes the partial recipe. A low-pass filter can reduce upper-partial levels and soften the result. Begin with Filter 1 FREQ and a modest resonance adjustment before drawing custom curves or changing filter order.

Prism changes partial frequencies. Depending on its amount, mode and mapping, that can move a harmonic tone toward an inharmonic or metallic one. Harmonizer instead clones and transposes partials. These are different operations, so learn one before combining them.

Pluck controls frequency-dependent decay; its default shape makes high frequencies die away before low ones. Phaser creates spectral cancellations and can apply cancellation patterns to individual harmonics. Calling all of these controls a “phase effect” hides the distinction you need when choosing one.

Read each shape as a concept: level, frequency position, added partials, decay and cancellations are different changes. These are not measured settings.

Loop the same phrase three times: change only the filter, then only Prism, then only Harmonizer. Return to the starting patch between comparisons and match the levels. Describe each result in plain terms—duller, more metallic, denser—before layering effects. ## Use the ENV editor without getting lost

The first selector chooses *what* changes; the second chooses *what drives it*. Volume → Envelope controls a note's level over time. Filter 1 frequency → Keyboard mapping makes filter behaviour depend on the note played. For a control you cannot locate in the list, right-click it and choose **Edit articulator**.

For the first patch, select Volume and Envelope, enable the envelope with the switch at the lower left, then edit the points. Use a quick attack and shorter decay for a pluck, or a slower attack and longer release for a pad, adjusting to the phrase rather than copying a fixed number.

**Why do the ATT, DEC, SUS and REL knobs spring back?** They are relative modifiers, not ordinary fixed ADSR dials. The manual explains that the displayed curve can return to its original appearance while the modifier still changes playback. Edit the envelope points to define the base shape; use the modifiers for relative changes and automation. If points will not move, check FREEZE. If nothing changes audibly, check the selected target, part and enable switch.

Several articulation sources can affect one target at once. Add only one filter envelope or LFO initially. Mod X/Y/Z mappings become useful performance controls later. ## Set unison for purpose, not maximum width

Harmor's unison adds subvoices to each note. Its order and pan, pitch and phase settings affect the result. Chorus works on the combined audio in the effects section instead. Try both if you need width, but compare the actual processor load; neither a universal CPU saving nor a better sound follows from the name alone.

Two or three unison voices are a sensible listening starting point, not a required preset value. Adjust pitch and pan spread gently. Compare low and high notes, then stereo and mono. Higher order increases synthesis work, and the manual warns that phase settings which smooth high notes can make low notes noisy.

Start with a small unison order, then check the intended notes, mono playback and actual processor load. The illustration does not prescribe slider values.

Unison index mapping can give individual subvoices different pitch, pan or other behaviour. Leave it for a deliberate layered patch. If a simple sound lacks weight, revisit its timbre, pitch and envelope before multiplying voices.

## Use Parts A and B when the patch needs two identities

A and B are independent synthesis sections. Their selector chooses the part you edit; the switches at the ends of the mix slider activate them. Part Mix balances A and B but is **not automatable**. Use the parts' volume envelopes to make their balance change over time.

Link parts connects matching edits during patch design. An external controller linked to one control does not automatically drive its partner: link each part's control separately. Harmor's internal automation maintains the linked relationships. Check the result with both parts audible instead of assuming every kind of linking behaves identically.

## Build a Harmor patch in eight controlled steps

1. **Check the license.** Confirm whether FL Studio and Harmor are unlocked. If either is in trial, export the sound while it plays and defer the reopen test until properly licensed.
2. **Start with Part A.** Load an initialized patch, deactivate Part B and bypass unnecessary effects. Loop a short phrase covering the intended note range.
3. **Choose the timbre.** Start with Timbre 1 using the MIX blend, set the part's pitch, and introduce Timbre 2 only if it helps.
4. **Shape the envelope.** Select Volume → Envelope, enable it and edit its points so the attack, sustain and release fit the phrase.
5. **Set filter and motion.** Adjust Filter 1 FREQ and resonance, then introduce one intentional movement source such as a filter envelope or LFO.
6. **Test unison.** Try a small order, compare low and high notes, and check mono playback and CPU on the same phrase.
7. **Match the FX level.** Add only useful processing, comparing dry and effected sound at similar loudness in the arrangement.
8. **Save and verify.** Save a named preset and a separate project copy. Keep any source audio. With both host and plugin licensed, reopen the copy and check the sound, envelopes and automation without overwriting the original.

Check the license before the reopen test. Keep the original project, its source audio and a rendered reference while you verify a separate copy.

The wrapper's [Save preset as command](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/plugins/wrapper.htm?ref=flstudiopro.com) saves the plugin state; it is not a replacement for the project, MIDI and linked source files. If an effect improves the sound only by making it louder, lower its output and listen again before keeping it.

## Resynthesize audio without confusing it with image synthesis

Choose the Resynthesis template from Harmor's presets. In IMG, use Image options → Analyze audio file, or drop an audio file into the image window. Start with a short recording whose pitch and timing you recognize, so you can hear what the synthesis changes.

In resynthesis mode, edits reference the original sample data. **The source audio is linked, not embedded in the FLP.** Keep it in a stable project location and verify that a transferred project can find it. Image synthesis uses editable gain and frequency image planes. Converting a resynthesis patch to that mode breaks its link to the original sample data; there is no switch back to source-referenced resynthesis in the converted patch. Save a separate copy first. The [manual's IMG section](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/plugins/Harmor.htm?ref=flstudiopro.com#harmor%5Fimg) explains that tradeoff: image editing flexibility replaces the original source reference. Imported images are embedded, unlike the linked audio used for resynthesis.

### Load stereo audio into both parts correctly

Use the Resynthesis template and load the **same stereo file** into Part A and Part B. Check ADV: A supplies the mid component, while B has the **side** switch enabled. Set the A/B mix to **50%** for the original stereo balance before further sound design. This is not the same as panning two unrelated samples left and right.

The Resynthesis template uses A for mid and B for side. Load the same stereo file into both and begin at 50% balance before changing the sound.

Link the parts when playback-position edits should stay synchronized. If the result unexpectedly sounds mono, check that B is active, its side setting is correct, both parts contain the same source and the balance has not been moved to an endpoint. Compare against the original recording before adding effects.

## Control image playback, formants and scrubbing

In IMG, the horizontal direction represents time and the vertical direction represents frequency or partial position. TIME changes the start offset; the coarse and fine SPEED controls change the scan rate. The looping menu offers One shot, Loop and Ping pong. Establish a useful start and loop before adding motion.

TIME moves the start; SPEED changes the scan rate. For free time-and-pitch scrubbing, set speed to zero and right-drag in the image, then test the notes you need.

For manual time-and-pitch scrubbing, set speed to 0%, then right-click and drag in the image: horizontal movement changes time, vertical movement changes pitch. For a working example, load the built-in Free scrubbing preset and read its info panel. FORM changes formant character. The manual describes formant preservation over a limited ±600-cent range; that is not a promise of artifact-free transposition on every recording. Test the actual notes your part uses. A vocal that works near its original pitch may become a useful effect elsewhere, but it is a different result.

## Reduce Harmor CPU before committing the part to audio

Test the same phrase after each change: close visual feedback, reduce unnecessary unison, shorten excessive releases, then isolate Part B and effects. High harmonic Blur settings can also be expensive. If you lower ADV partial count, listen for lost brightness: its range is 12–516 partials per voice, and reducing it removes high-frequency detail.

Rendering audio can be useful once the sound is settled. Preserve a named source-project copy and listen to the render before replacing anything. Muting the audio output alone is not evidence that synthesis processing has stopped. Check actual load and playback before relying on it.

Do not change system-wide buffer settings to diagnose a single Harmor knob. ## Choose the next lesson by the job

Use Harmor when partial shaping, deep articulation or resynthesis is the point. Use FLEX to work quickly from finished presets, or 3xOSC for a simpler first patch. ## Harmor in FL Studio FAQ

### Is Harmor included with FL Studio?

Harmor is included in All Plugins Edition, not the standard Fruity, Producer or Signature bundle contents. A separately owned license can also unlock it. An installed trial instance is not proof of ownership.

### Is Harmor additive or subtractive?

Its engine is additive: partials combine to create the sound. Familiar filter and envelope controls provide a subtractive-style way to shape that partial data before audio output.

### How many partials does Harmor use?

Up to 516 per note, per unison voice. ADV partial count can reduce the number to as few as 12 to trade high-frequency detail for lower synthesis load.

### What is the difference between resynthesis and image synthesis?

Resynthesis references the source audio during editing. Image synthesis uses editable gain and frequency images. Converting breaks the original audio reference, so save a separate resynthesis copy first.

### Can Harmor load audio files?
