# Connect a MIDI Keyboard to FL Studio (Fix No Input)

To connect a MIDI keyboard to FL Studio, plug it in before opening the app, then go to **Options > MIDI settings** or press **F10**. Select the keyboard in the **Input** list, click **Enable**, choose its supported Controller type, or a generic controller when no named profile exists, and play a key. The MIDI activity light should blink.

A blink proves that FL Studio received some MIDI data—not necessarily the notes you meant to play. If the keyboard is missing from Input, refresh the list and check whether the operating system detects it. If it is listed but unresponsive, check Enable, the input port and the controller mode. If activity appears without sound, confirm that key presses produce note messages before testing the instrument and audio output.

## Start with the exact MIDI symptom

A controller can light up and still send no usable MIDI. Before reinstalling anything, press a key and watch the Main Panel while an instrument channel is selected. Then match the result below.

Start with the symptom you can prove; a powered keyboard and a received MIDI message are not the same result.

## Use the connection your keyboard actually provides

A USB controller normally connects directly to the computer and carries MIDI data over that cable. A keyboard with only round five-pin MIDI sockets needs a MIDI interface: connect the keyboard’s MIDI OUT to the interface’s MIDI IN. If you also want FL Studio to play the hardware keyboard, add the return direction from the interface’s MIDI OUT to the keyboard’s MIDI IN.

For a first diagnosis, connect USB hardware to a direct computer port rather than a passive hub. This is a power and connection test, not a claim that every powered hub is bad. If the direct connection works, add the hub back later and prove it separately.

The MIDI routes carry control data. The bottom path records analog synth audio; some hardware also supports USB audio. Choose cable connectors that match your device.

## Let the operating system detect the controller before FL Studio

Many keyboards are class-compliant and use the operating system’s built-in MIDI driver. Check your model’s setup guide before installing a separate driver: it may be required, or recommended for features such as using several MIDI applications at once. Connect the keyboard, turn it on and wait for Windows or macOS to finish recognizing it. Open FL Studio after that.

Image-Line’s setup sequence matters because the Input list is built from devices detected by the operating system. If you connected the keyboard after FL Studio opened, use **Refresh device list**. If it remains absent, close FL Studio, disconnect and reconnect the controller, wait for OS detection and reopen the app.

On macOS, open **Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup**, then **Window > Show MIDI Studio**. A lit screen proves power, not successful MIDI detection.

## Connect the MIDI keyboard in four moves

Open **Options > MIDI settings** or press **F10**. In the lower **Input** area:

1. Select the keyboard or the MIDI interface receiving its five-pin cable.
2. Click **Enable** for that selected input.
3. Choose the exact supported Controller type or script when the manufacturer documents one; otherwise use the available generic-controller option.
4. Select an instrument in the Channel Rack, play a key and watch the MIDI activity light.

Select Input, enable the device and choose its type. The separate MIDI activity indicator is on the Main Panel, not inside MIDI Settings.

## Generic controller is not a failure

Image-Line says FL Studio supports generic USB/MIDI controllers. A keyboard missing from the named Controller type list can still play instruments and send standard notes or control-change messages. “Generic” means FL Studio does not have a preconfigured map for that device’s special behavior; it does not mean the keys are unsupported.

A supported profile or MIDI Script can add transport buttons, jog wheels, pad feedback and other device-specific controls. What the profile adds depends on the model.

Start with notes. Once keys reliably play a selected instrument, install or update the documented script and select it under Controller type. Generic input is enough for notes; a supported script or vendor profile adds the non-standard controls.

## Use the activity light and Debug log as proof

Test one key, then one pad, then one knob while watching the MIDI activity light. To see what arrived, open the [Debug panel in System Settings](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/envsettings%5Fdebug.htm?ref=flstudiopro.com) and repeat the test while the panel is open. Look for a note message from the key, rather than treating an unrelated control-change message as proof that the keys work.

One received note does not prove the transport buttons work. A knob message does not prove the knob is linked to the right parameter. Keep each test separate: which physical control did you move, what message arrived, and did the intended instrument or parameter respond?

- No light and no log event: stay with connection, Input and Enable.
- Note event arrives, no sound: check note routing, the instrument and audio output.
- Notes arrive, controls do not: check profile, script, mode and DAW port.
- Controls arrive but move nothing: check the actual link or focused target.

Test the control first, then choose the result you actually observed. A knob message is not proof that notes arrive.

## If the MIDI controller is missing from Input

First click **Refresh device list**. If the controller is still absent, check the connection and operating-system detection before changing FL Studio mappings:

1. Power the controller and use a known data-capable USB cable; some charging cables carry power only.
2. Try one direct USB port with the correct data cable. If an adapter is unavoidable, test a known working, compatible one.
3. Confirm the operating system lists the MIDI device.
4. Install or remove a vendor driver only according to the current guide for that exact model.
5. Close and reopen FL Studio after OS detection, then click **Refresh device list**.

If the operating system sees the interface but FL Studio does not, close another DAW, standalone instrument or controller editor that may have opened the MIDI port exclusively, then refresh again. Driver and firmware changes must match your exact model. For example, a vendor may recommend removing an old driver for a newer class-compliant controller; that is not a reason to remove every MIDI driver.

Refresh Input first; if the device is still absent, compare FL Studio’s list with operating-system detection before changing drivers.

## If the device is listed but the activity light stays dark

Select the exact row under **Input**, not the similarly named device under Output, and confirm **Enable** is on. Also confirm **Options > Enable MIDI remote control** is selected. Click Refresh device list, then retest one key.

Controllers with several entries may expose a normal MIDI port, a DAW-control port and sometimes a legacy or virtual port. Begin with the port the vendor identifies for keys. Do not assign a random profile to every entry. If a controller has a hardware DAW/Preset switch, make sure it is in the mode specified by the current FL Studio setup guide for that device.

If the row remains unresponsive, close any standalone editor, synth or second DAW that may have opened the same MIDI port exclusively, then refresh. Change one condition and retest; closing six apps and reinstalling two drivers at once leaves no useful result.

## If MIDI activity appears but the keyboard makes no sound

Start in the Debug panel: do key presses produce note messages? If only knobs send data, stay with the controller’s note port, hardware mode and input settings. If notes arrive, add a stock instrument with a playable preset and select its Channel Rack selector. Opening a plugin window is not always the same as selecting it for live MIDI.

Check whether the controller is locked to a different instrument, whether its MIDI channel has a special assignment, and whether the notes fall inside the preset’s playable range. Try a note inside the plugin: if that sounds but the physical key does not, keep investigating note routing.

Next check the instrument preset and volume, its Mixer track and the Master output. The Channel Rack mute button affects pattern playback, not live MIDI input; do not treat that button alone as an explanation for silent live keys. Play an existing pattern with known sound. First confirm note messages, then check where they go. The controls separate note routing from the instrument and audio-output tests.

## If keys work but pads, knobs or transport do not

If a pad sends notes but FPC stays silent, first confirm the on-screen pad plays a loaded sample. Then compare the hardware pad’s note with FPC’s assigned note. A pad triggering an empty or differently mapped note is not the same problem as missing MIDI input.

Working keys prove the basic note port. Special controls may depend on a named Controller type, an updated MIDI Script, the controller’s DAW mode, or a second input/output pair. Image-Line notes that specially supported controllers may need matching Input and Output port numbers, while different devices should not reuse a port in a way that creates conflicts.

There is no universal magic port number. Follow the current guide for your model. That is a useful pattern, not an instruction for every keyboard.

For a normal FL Studio knob, right-click the target, choose **Link to controller** and move the hardware knob. Some controllers expose one port for notes and another for DAW controls; follow the exact vendor profile instead of enabling every port blindly.

## If the instrument plays but notes are not recorded

Hearing an instrument and recording notes are separate results. [Right-click Record](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/toolbar%5Fpanels.htm?ref=flstudiopro.com) and enable Notes (called Note in the older recording guide). For a safe test, choose an empty Pattern and the intended Instrument Channel. Turn off Step Editing, Record to step sequencer, Recording starts playback and Wait for input, then arm Record and press Play. Piano roll recording is disabled in Performance Mode; test a normal project when diagnosing missing recorded notes.

## Fix velocity, sustain, pitch bend and mod controls separately

Do not group every expression problem under “MIDI not working.” Velocity is note data, sustain normally uses CC64, pitch bend uses its own message and a linked knob may send a control-change value through a script or custom mapping.

Test expression controls one at a time because velocity, CC64, pitch bend and custom links travel through different rules.

## Keep multiple MIDI devices from colliding

Enable each controller separately and name its job in your notes: keys, pads, transport or external synth. FL Studio can use multiple controllers, but special profiles may rely on unique MIDI channels or port assignments. Avoid copying one controller’s port map onto another simply because it worked in a video.

For basic instrument playing, the selected Channel Rack instrument is the cleanest first test. For special feedback and transport, match Input and Output only where the supported profile asks for it. If adding a second controller breaks the first, disable the new entries, restore the known working map and introduce one port at a time.

With more than one controller, label the role of each input and avoid reusing a port where a supported profile requires unique routing.

1. Identify whether the device is absent, silent, partly working or only failing to record.
2. Connect with a known data cable and test one direct USB port or the correct five-pin MIDI path.
3. Let Windows or macOS detect the controller before opening FL Studio.
4. Open Options > MIDI settings, select the correct Input and click Enable.
5. Choose the documented Controller type or a generic controller for basic note input.
6. Select an instrument and use the activity light plus Debug log to prove received data.
7. If the device is absent, refresh the list and follow only the current driver/firmware guide for that model.
8. If notes work but controls do not, check the control mapping first; use a script, hardware mode or DAW port where the device guide calls for it.
9. If sound works but recording does not, enable the Note filter and select the target Pattern and instrument.
10. Save the working port, mode and script choices before adding another controller or custom link.
