- Description: Four kinds of mute, four unmute-all moves: Playlist tracks, muted clips, Channel Rack LEDs and Mixer tracks, plus clean solos and controller mute buttons.

FL Studio mutes sound in four main places, and each one has its own unmute-all move. For Playlist tracks, right-click any track’s Mute switch twice: the first right-click solos that track, the second unsolos it and every track comes back on. For muted clips, open the Playlist menu, choose Select > Select muted and press Alt/Opt+Shift+M. In the Mixer, Ctrl+Right-click any Mute icon to unmute all tracks, and in the Channel Rack a solo followed by an unsolo clears every channel mute.

If the double right-click brings the same mutes straight back, Restore previous state after solo is switched on in General settings and is doing its job: it remembers the mute pattern from before the solo. I’d turn it off for the cleanup and decide afterwards whether you want it back. Below you’ll find how to tell which mute you’re looking at, how to solo cleanly in each window, how to mute notes, and how to put mute and solo on a controller.

## Which mute is silencing your track?

The four layers don’t override each other. A clip muted with the Mute tool stays silent even when its track switch is on, and a channel muted in the Channel Rack stays silent in its patterns whatever the Playlist switches say. Image-Line’s [Playlist manual](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/playlist.htm?ref=flstudiopro.com) puts it plainly: the Mute tool is independent of the Track mute switch, which has no effect on Muted Clips. So start by finding the layer, then use the matching fix.

Each mute layer has its own reset. Fix the layer you actually muted, not the one you happen to be looking at.

## Unmute all Playlist tracks

In the [Playlist](https://flstudiopro.com/fl-studio-playlist/), a track’s Mute switch applies to all Clips on the Playlist track/lane. Left-click toggles mute for one track. Solo and unsolo sit on the same switch: Ctrl+Left-click or Right-click. That pair is the fastest way to clear a Playlist full of muted tracks:

1. Open the Playlist with F5.
2. Right-click the Mute switch on any track header. That track is now soloed.
3. Right-click the same switch again. The solo is released and every track switch turns back on.

It isn’t a hidden trick. The [Image-Line forum thread](https://forum.image-line.com/viewtopic.php?t=224982&ref=flstudiopro.com) that ranks for this problem asked how to unmute all Playlist tracks at once, and the whole answer was: Right click the green button twice. The [Channel Rack manual](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/channelrack.htm?ref=flstudiopro.com) spells out the same logic for channels, describing the second action as unsolo the Channel (unmute all).

### When unsolo puts your mutes back

Open Options > General settings and look for Restore previous state after solo. The [General settings manual](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/envsettings%5Fgeneral.htm?ref=flstudiopro.com) says that when a Solo command is done and then undone, this option will restore the pattern of soloed and unsoloed items prior to the Solo, and that it affects the Channel Rack, Playlist and Mixer. With it on, the double right-click returns you to the mutes you had, which is exactly what you don’t want during a cleanup. I’d keep it off while untangling a project and switch it on only if you solo often during mixing and want your deliberate mutes to survive every solo.

![Flow showing a right-click on one Playlist Mute switch soloing the track, a second right-click restoring all tracks, and the Restore previous state after solo option bringing back earlier mutes instead](https://storage.ghost.io/c/23/d1/23d1461e-9a6f-4583-9f0a-3ee044fc8192/content/images/2026/10/solo-unsolo-flow.webp)

Solo, then unsolo clears the track switches. With Restore previous state after solo enabled, the second click brings back the old mute pattern instead.

### Grouped and locked tracks

Tracks joined with the track header’s Group with above track option act as one group for mute and solo. Alt+Left-click on any member toggles mute for the grouped tracks, and Alt+Right-click toggles solo for them. Shift+click a Mute switch to lock its state, so a locked switch keeps its setting; in the [Mixer manual](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/mixer.htm?ref=flstudiopro.com) the same Shift+Left-click both sets and releases the lock. If one track refuses to follow a solo or a click, Shift+click its switch first.

If the solo and unsolo changed the switches but the music is still missing, the mutes sit on the clips themselves. That’s the next section.

## Unmute muted clips in the Playlist

Clip mutes are separate from track switches, and they arrive in several ways:

- The Mute tool (T): left-click on clips to mute them, left-click and drag to mute multiple clips. A double right-click in the Playlist also activates the Mute tool.
- Selection shortcuts: Alt/Opt+M mutes the selection, and Right-Alt/Opt+Left-click is listed as Mute selected.
- [Consolidate](https://flstudiopro.com/fl-studio-consolidate-tracks/): Consolidate track/s converts all Pattern and Audio Clips on each selected track to an Audio Clip and mutes the source Clips.

To clear clip mutes across the whole project, open the Playlist menu and choose Select > Select muted. It selects all Clips that have been muted (by the mute selection tool). Then press Alt/Opt+Shift+M, the shortcut for Unmute selection. If you prefer menus, Playlist menu > Edit > Mute/Unmute does the same job for the selected clips.

![Playlist with dimmed muted clips, the Playlist menu open at Select then Select muted, and an Alt or Opt plus Shift plus M key hint that unmutes the selection](https://storage.ghost.io/c/23/d1/23d1461e-9a6f-4583-9f0a-3ee044fc8192/content/images/2026/10/clip-unmute-route.webp)

Select muted finds every muted clip in one step; Alt/Opt+Shift+M then unmutes the whole selection.

For a single lane, right-click the track header and choose Unmute all clips. The manual notes that this option is not related to the track Mute switch and suggests it for clips muted by a Consolidate function. I’d still leave the sources of a consolidated track muted unless you’ve removed the rendered audio clip, otherwise you hear the part twice.

Audio clips have one more route. When several Audio Clips are selected while the Channel Settings window is open, the [audio clip settings](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/playlist%5Faudioclip.htm?ref=flstudiopro.com) offer a Multi-Selection Mute option with Don’t change, Mute all, Unmute all and Flip state. Choose Unmute all and every selected audio clip plays again.

## Unmute all channels in the Channel Rack

Each row in the [Channel Rack](https://flstudiopro.com/fl-studio-channel-rack/) has a Mute LED. Turning this LED off will mute the Channel, and clicking it again will unmute it. Channel mutes only stop pattern playback: Image-Line notes that live MIDI input to the Channel will continue to play, because mute/solo applies only to Step Sequencer and Piano roll playback. That is why an instrument can sound fine on your keyboard and still be missing from the beat.

Three ways to bring every channel back:

- Solo and unsolo: right-click any channel’s LED and choose Solo, then repeat the action. Ctrl+Left-click on the LED solos and unsolos too.
- Menu: select the channels and use Unmute selected in the Channel Options menu. Its partner Mute selected silences them again.
- Keyboard: in the Channel Rack and Step Sequencer shortcut list, keys 1 to 9 and 0 mute or unmute the first 10 channels, and Ctrl/Cmd+1 to 9 and 0 solo them, so a stray number key can mute a channel without you noticing.

Alt/Opt+click on a Mute LED mutes or solos a whole channel group, where groups are the Channel Filter groups. If you’d like a one-click button for this, you’re not alone: an Image-Line [feature request for an unmute-all-channels button](https://forum.image-line.com/viewtopic.php?t=217992&ref=flstudiopro.com) dates back to 2020.

## Unmute all Mixer tracks

The [Mixer](https://flstudiopro.com/fl-studio-mixer/) is the one window with a direct unmute-all command for its tracks: Ctrl+Right-click any track’s Mute icon and FL Studio unmutes all Mixer tracks. Left-click still mutes or unmutes one track, and Right-click solos or unsolos it.

Shift+Left-click locks or releases a Mixer track’s Mute icon, exactly as in the Playlist. Each effect slot also has its own Mute/Disable LED that behaves like the track Mute switch, so a missing effect is not the same fault as a muted track.

## How to solo a track in FL Studio

Solo lives on the same switch as mute in every window, so the controls are easy to remember once you know which window you’re in:

| Window | Solo or unsolo one item | Solo a group or a signal chain |
| ------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| Playlist | Right-click or Ctrl+Left-click the track’s Mute switch | Alt+Right-click any member of a track group |
| Channel Rack | Right-click the LED > Solo, Ctrl+Left-click, or Ctrl/Cmd+1 to 0 for the first ten channels | Alt/Opt+click a Mute LED for a Channel Filter group |
| Mixer | Right-click the Mute icon, or select the track and press S | Select the track and press Alt/Opt+S (Alt Solo) to hear it plus everything routed to and from it |

The [Mixer track menu](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/mixer%5Fmixermenu.htm?ref=flstudiopro.com) calls the second kind Alt Solo: it solos the selected Track AND all other Mixer Tracks routed TO and FROM it, so the sources feeding an insert and the buses it feeds stay audible. I’d use Alt Solo whenever a sound runs through sends or buses, because it’s the documented way to hear the whole chain at once. For finding which lane makes a noise, the Playlist switch is quicker.

## Mute notes in the Piano roll

The [Piano roll](https://flstudiopro.com/fl-studio-piano-roll/) has its own Mute tool (T): left-click notes to mute them, or left-click and drag to mute multiple notes. The [Piano roll menu](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/pianoroll%5Fmenu.htm?ref=flstudiopro.com) adds Mute / Unmute for the selected notes and a Select muted command, and Alt/Opt+M and Alt/Opt+Shift+M mute and unmute a selection, the same pair as in the Playlist.

Two settings create muted notes without a deliberate click. In Paint drum sequencer mode (N), left-click on notes mutes/unmutes them, so clicking on existing notes in that mode silences them. And with the Channel Rack option Mute removed steps, the Piano roll notes associated with deactivated steps are muted rather than deleted, which keeps their volume and pan data while you try other step patterns.

## Mute and solo from a MIDI controller

The Playlist manual suggests linking the Channel mute switches to buttons on your MIDI controller to mute and unmute instruments during a performance. The general linking workflow is in our [MIDI controller mapping guide](https://flstudiopro.com/fl-studio-map-midi-controller/), and if FL Studio doesn’t see the controller at all, fix that first with the [MIDI not detected checklist](https://flstudiopro.com/fl-studio-midi-not-detected/).

Controller scripts go further. The [MIDI scripting reference](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/midi%5Fscripting.htm?ref=flstudiopro.com) lists muteTrack and soloTrack for Playlist and Mixer tracks, with an inGroup option on the Playlist soloTrack that solos a track group like Alt+Right-click does, plus muteChannel and soloChannel for channels, where a value of 1 mutes or solos and 0 releases. I’d only go the script route if your controller’s own FL Studio script lacks the buttons you want; a plain link is quicker to set up and to undo.

## Still silent after unmuting everything?

When every switch, clip and note is unmuted and you still hear nothing, mute isn’t the cause. Work through the [no sound in FL Studio checklist](https://flstudiopro.com/fl-studio-no-sound/) for audio device, Master level and routing faults. If playback is fine and only the rendered file is silent or missing a part, the [silent export guide](https://flstudiopro.com/fl-studio-export-no-sound/) covers muted tracks at render time, forgotten solos and mute automation. Keyboard users will find the everyday keys in our [FL Studio shortcuts](https://flstudiopro.com/fl-studio-shortcuts/) page, and every mute and solo key per window in the official [shortcut list](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/basics%5Fshortcuts.htm?ref=flstudiopro.com).

## Quick answers

### How do I unmute all tracks in FL Studio at once?

In the Playlist, right-click one track’s Mute switch twice: solo, then unsolo. In the Mixer, Ctrl+Right-click any Mute icon. If old mutes come back, turn off Restore previous state after solo in Options > General settings.

### How do I unmute all Mixer tracks?

Hold Ctrl and right-click the Mute icon on any Mixer track. The Mixer manual lists this as Unmute All.

### How do I solo a track in FL Studio?

Right-click its Mute switch in the Playlist, Channel Rack or Mixer. In the Mixer you can also select the track and press S, or press Alt/Opt+S to keep everything routed to and from it.

### How do I unmute an audio clip?

Select the clip and press Alt/Opt+Shift+M, or use Playlist menu > Edit > Mute/Unmute. For every muted clip at once, use Select > Select muted first. A clip muted this way ignores the track’s Mute switch.

### Why are my channels muted when I press number keys?

With the Channel Rack active, keys 1 to 9 and 0 mute or unmute the first ten channels. Press the same key again to bring that channel back.

## My verdict

A silent part in FL Studio is usually one of four mute layers, and each layer has a one-step reset once you know where to look. I’d check them in this order: Playlist track switches with the double right-click, clip mutes with Select muted, the Channel Rack LEDs, then the Mixer with Ctrl+Right-click. Before any of that, switch off Restore previous state after solo for the cleanup, because it turns the fastest fix into a loop. Once the project plays again, keep mutes on the layer where you meant them: track switches for arranging, Mixer mutes for mixing, clip mutes only for clips you really want silent.
