# How to Use NewTone in FL Studio: Tune Vocals by Hand

NewTone is the FL Studio tool I would choose when a vocal or melodic recording needs deliberate, note-by-note correction. It is an editor rather than a live insert: you load recorded audio, inspect the detected notes, adjust pitch or timing, then return the result to the Playlist.

The useful goal is rarely “make every note perfectly straight.” Good correction keeps the musical movement that belongs in the performance while fixing the notes, transitions or timing changes that distract from it. This guide explains that workflow without treating NewTone as an automatic one-knob repair.

## What NewTone does

Image-Line describes NewTone as a pitch-correction and time-manipulation editor for vocals, instruments and other recordings. In its default Pitch mode, detected notes appear as blocks against a piano-roll-style pitch grid. The orange pitch trace shows movement inside each note, while the note block shows the average detected pitch.

That view makes NewTone useful for three related jobs:

- move a note closer to the intended pitch;
- reduce unwanted drift or vibrato without removing all expression;
- change note starts, ends and timing while keeping the edit tied to the detected phrase.

NewTone is included with FL Studio Signature Bundle and All Plugins Edition. The current Image-Line edition comparison lists it as “Signature Bundle and up,” so check your license before building a project around it.

## Prepare the recording before pitch correction

Start from a clean, dry or lightly processed audio file. Heavy reverb, delay, doubles and a loud backing track can make pitch detection harder to read because NewTone has to interpret more than one moving sound. For a vocal, edit the chosen take first and keep an untouched copy in the project.

Pitch correction works better as a later editing decision than as a substitute for choosing the right take.

**Keep a recoverable original:** duplicate the audio clip or save the corrected version under a new name. NewTone can save or send edited audio, but the source recording is still the reference if a correction later sounds too rigid.

## Load audio and let NewTone analyze it

1. Add NewTone to the project from FL Studio’s plugin list.
2. Open NewTone’s **File** menu and choose **Load sample**, or use the editor’s supported sample-loading route.
3. Wait for the pitch analysis to finish before judging the note blocks.
4. Set the displayed tempo if the file’s embedded or detected tempo is wrong and timing edits need to align with the project.
5. Use the transport and loop controls to hear a short phrase repeatedly.

NewTone can sync the loaded sample to the FL Studio project tempo. Slaved playback can also align NewTone with the host transport in Song mode. That is helpful when a correction only makes sense against the chords or rhythm around it.

## Read the pitch display before moving notes

Do not correct every block as soon as it appears. First compare three pieces of information: the note’s average position, the orange pitch trace inside it and the sound of the phrase in context.

## Correct pitch with Center, Variation and Transition

NewTone’s three global correction controls are the fastest way to establish a sensible starting point:

- **Center** moves detected notes toward the nearest semitone.
- **Variation** reduces pitch movement within notes, including drift and vibrato.
- **Transition** changes how quickly pitch moves between notes.

I would raise Center first while listening to a short phrase, then use less Variation than seems tempting. A high Variation correction can flatten the small movements that make a vocal sound human. Transition deserves the same restraint: tightening every connection can damage slides and portamento that belong in the performance.

For local corrections, select a note and move it to the intended pitch. NewTone also supports fine unsnapped movement with the Alt modifier and can constrain vertical movement with Snap to scale. ## Split, join and move note boundaries

Pitch detection can place a boundary in the wrong spot or combine two sung notes into one block. Fix those boundaries before making detailed pitch changes. Cut mode creates a new split at the point you choose, and NewTone provides commands for joining slices again.

When timing needs attention, move a note or adjust its edges while watching the surrounding words and breaths. NewTone’s horizontal snap can follow a time grid, and holding Alt temporarily overrides snapping. Keep timing edits small at first. Stretching one syllable changes the space available to the next, so a repair can move the problem rather than solve it.

If the task is mainly tempo alignment across a larger clip, NewTime or FL Studio’s audio stretching tools may be a cleaner fit. NewTone earns its place when timing and pitch decisions are tied to detected notes.

## Edit one note in Advanced Edit mode

Advanced Edit gives per-note control over properties that the global knobs change across the whole file. Image-Line’s manual lists pitch, formant and volume controls, plus detailed pitch-variation and vibrato parameters.

Use it when one note needs different treatment from its neighbors:

- correct the center of one missed note without increasing global correction;
- reduce a single unstable note while preserving vibrato elsewhere;
- change volume when a corrected note jumps forward or disappears;
- adjust formant when a larger pitch move changes the perceived vocal character.

Formant control is not a universal “natural” switch. It changes vocal color independently from the basic note movement, so compare the edited phrase with the original and the full mix. If a large correction still sounds wrong, the better answer may be another take or a smaller musical change.

## Send the corrected result back to FL Studio

NewTone can send the edited audio to the Playlist as an Audio Clip with note-boundary markers. It also has a drag-selection control: with a selection it copies that section, and without one it copies the entire sample to a compatible FL Studio destination. Saving the sample from NewTone creates a separate audio file when you need a named, reusable render.

A second route sends the detected notes to the Piano roll as MIDI. Treat that MIDI as a transcription starting point. Pitch detection can interpret slides, breaths and ambiguous attacks as notes that need cleanup before they drive an instrument.

## NewTone vs Pitcher

Choose NewTone when you want offline, visible, note-by-note control. Choose Pitcher when the job is live pitch manipulation during playback or monitoring. Image-Line’s NewTone manual explicitly points to Pitcher as the related plugin for live pitch manipulation.

The two tools can belong to the same production process, but they solve different moments. Recording through a live correction effect does not remove the value of detailed editing, and editing a take in NewTone does not create a live monitoring workflow.

## Common NewTone problems

### The vocal sounds robotic

Back off Variation first, then check Center and Transition. A note can be accurately centered while retaining controlled movement. Also inspect whether note boundaries were cut at real musical changes.

### NewTone detects the wrong notes

Check whether the source contains harmony, reverb, a double or instrumental bleed. NewTone is most useful when it can follow one clear melodic line. Split or clean the source before forcing detected blocks onto a scale.

### The timing no longer matches the beat

Verify the sample tempo, project tempo and Sync state. When using slaved playback, confirm FL Studio is in Song mode and judge the phrase against the Playlist position rather than in isolation.

### The edited audio is not in the Playlist

Use **Send to Playlist as audio clip**, the send-selection command or the drag-selection control. Saving a sample creates a file; it does not by itself guarantee that the file has been placed at the correct Playlist position.

### NewTone is missing from the installed edition

Check the current FL Studio edition comparison and the license active on the machine. Image-Line currently lists NewTone for Signature Bundle and All Plugins Edition, not Fruity or Producer Edition.

## A practical correction order

My preferred order is simple: choose the right take, keep the original, fix detection boundaries, set a moderate global correction, repair only the notes that still pull attention, then listen against the full arrangement. Timing and formant edits come after basic pitch because they can hide which change actually improved or damaged the phrase.

That order keeps NewTone as an editor rather than an effect you push to maximum. The result should support the performance, not advertise the correction.
