# Resample Audio in FL Studio: Render, Consolidate or Record

Your synth phrase sounds right, but you want to chop the result instead of editing more MIDI. To resample audio in FL Studio, render a self-contained Pattern, consolidate clips in their Playlist context, or record the performance into Edison. Each route captures a different part of the project. Choose the source and effects first; turning a sound into a waveform does not automatically preserve everything you heard.

**Before committing:** keep the project and its source files. ## Choose what you want to resample

The first three choices create working audio from your project. The last two explain why the word “resample” also appears in settings that do not perform that job. Choose one printing route for the material. Resample mode is separate: it changes playback pitch and duration but does not create the Audio Clip for you. In Edison, send a selection or the whole recording when nothing is selected.

## Render a Pattern to audio in seven steps

1. **Preserve the source.** Save a project version and keep its external samples. In standard Trial, finish needed audio exports before closing the session or removing trial instruments.
2. **Inspect the Pattern.** Confirm which Channel Rack instruments it plays. If the sound depends on a Playlist automation move, use consolidation instead.
3. **Open the Picker Panel.** Right-click the intended Pattern and choose `Render as audio clip` so you can review the render settings.
4. **Choose the printed processing.** For a working print that includes its Insert effects but will pass through the existing Master again, use `Enable insert effects` on and `Enable master effects` off. Check any bus or send dependencies too.
5. **Check format and length.** Use a production WAV format your next tool supports, review the reported render length, and choose the Tail behavior for a loop or one-shot.
6. **Name and place the result.** Use a name such as `Bass_Distorted_01`, then inspect the new Audio Clip’s Mixer destination before playback.
7. **Compare one path at a time.** Listen to the source and print separately at comparable loudness. Check the attack, processing and decay before disabling any source component; keep anything needed elsewhere in the song.

`Quick render as audio clip` skips the settings review and uses the current render settings. Use it once those settings fit the sound. `Render and replace` also lets you review settings, then replaces instances of the chosen Pattern in the Playlist with its WAV Audio Clip. ### Why a Pattern render can miss an automation move

Picker rendering does not run Playlist-position automation through the arranged passage. It uses fixed automation values taken from the song start or Playlist selection. A filter sweep that opens across the chorus can therefore become a fixed filter setting in the print. Put the Pattern where it belongs in the song and consolidate that material when the movement is part of the sound.

These are three alternatives, not consecutive steps. Quick render uses current settings; Render as audio clip lets you review them; Render and replace also replaces Playlist instances. Use consolidation when Playlist-position automation is part of the sound.

## Consolidate selected clips in their Playlist context

Select the actual Pattern and Audio Clips you want to combine. Then open `Playlist menu > Tools > Consolidate playlist selection`. Here, “selection” means selected clips—not merely a highlighted strip of time. A timeline selection can affect the start, but it does not replace choosing the material.

- `From selection start` begins at the first selected clip or timeline selection and runs to the last selected clip’s end, with the render’s tail handling also relevant.
- `From song start` includes the leading section from the Playlist beginning. Use it when the file must line up at bar 1 in another project.

Consolidation creates an Audio Clip and mutes its source clips rather than deleting them. The documented default captures the instruments and Audio Clips through their Mixer effects, excludes Master effects, and routes the result to the Master. Check the actual render dialog: its effects options can be changed. For every clip on one lane, right-click its header and choose `Consolidate this track`. A Playlist lane is not inherently a Mixer Insert; keep those identities separate when checking the resulting Audio Clip. ### Keep the sidechain and send context

Solo-based Playlist renders can lose an audio sidechain that comes from excluded material. Image-Line specifically warns about this with `Export all playlist tracks` and track groups: the trigger must remain in the rendered context. Its alternative is to arm the required source and destination Mixer tracks and use `Alt/Opt+R` with the Mixer focused. Do not assume a missing pump can be repaired by turning on Master effects.

Also decide whether a parallel reverb or delay return belongs in your print. A wet return is not automatically an unwanted duplicate; it may be part of the intended mix. The problem is printing it and then adding the same processing again. In this conceptual example, the selected clips span bars 3–7\. Selection-start printing begins at bar 3; song-start printing includes silence from bars 1–3\. The Tail setting remains a separate choice.

## Record a sound-design performance into Edison

Use Edison when you want to capture a particular pass: a feedback sweep, a changing effect mix, or a generator whose next performance may differ. Select the Mixer track receiving that sound and press `Shift+E`. According to the [Edison recording instructions](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/plugins/Edison%5F2.htm?ref=flstudiopro.com), this loads it into the first empty FX slot with host-slaved playback and `On play` recording ready.

1. Check the incoming signal and the actual slot. “First empty” can be before, between or after existing processors. For this internal-audio route, you do not need to select a microphone input or arm Mixer disk recording.
2. Set `For` long enough for the passage and decay, and inspect `Append` before recording over a window containing useful audio. Save an existing capture separately if you need it.
3. Check that Edison is armed and start playback from FL Studio’s main transport. Perform the changes and allow the wanted decay to reach the recorder.
4. Stop the main transport and turn Edison’s Record button off. Disable host-slaved playback for independent auditioning so the capture does not unexpectedly play with the source.
5. Save a full raw copy if you will need material outside the chosen region. Select the useful region without cropping away the rest, then use `Tools > Sequencing > Send to Playlist as audio clip` or `Shift+C` with Edison focused.
6. Inspect the new Audio Clip’s timing, tempo behavior and routing. Keep only the intended source or print audible during comparison; do not leave Edison playing a third copy.

The send button’s left-click sends the selection, or the whole sample when there is no selection. Right-clicking has a different purpose: it replaces the selected Audio Clip or Sampler Channel. Selection transfer does not require destructive trimming. For a named disk copy, use `File > Save sample as` and a new filename; the [Edison File menu](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/plugins/Edison%5F3.htm?ref=flstudiopro.com) distinguishes ordinary WAV from compressed formats.

### On input and Input are not the same recording mode

`On input` starts after audio crosses the chosen trigger threshold and includes a pre-record buffer. `Input` also pauses during silence, which can interrupt the continuous timing you wanted to capture. For an arranged passage with intentional gaps and a quiet tail, `On play` gives a clearer transport-based start. Test a short pass before a performance you cannot repeat.

A finite `For` duration or file-size limit wraps and overwrites older recorded audio when exceeded. `Ever` is limited by available memory, not infinite storage. Edison works in RAM, and editing can require up to four times the sample’s space. Use an appropriate disk-recording or export workflow for long captures rather than relying on an oversized Edison buffer; the [internal-audio recording reference](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/recording%5Faudio.htm?ref=flstudiopro.com) separates those routes.

### Dry and wet depend on the recording position

An Edison instance before your distortion records before that distortion; an instance after it records the distorted signal. That does not prove the earlier capture is completely dry: the instrument or an upstream bus may already process the incoming audio. Both recordings are before that Mixer track’s fader, so lowering the fader does not lower Edison’s capture level. Later FX, separate returns and the Master are not automatically included.

If you audition a recording inside Edison, effects after that slot still process its output. Compare through a path that does not add unwanted processing again. A captures before these effects; B captures after them. Neither position guarantees an entirely dry input, and neither includes the later track fader or Master. Check the actual slot before recording.

## Use Resample mode for linked pitch and duration

`Time stretching > Mode > Resample` is a playback method, not a bounce command. Slowing the same material lowers pitch and lengthens it; speeding it up raises pitch and shortens it. For example, playing a two-second, 440 Hz tone at half speed gives four seconds at 220 Hz. These are arithmetic examples, not measured FL Studio test results.

The [Sampler’s TIME and Mode controls](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/chansettings%5Fsampler.htm?ref=flstudiopro.com) matter here. When TIME is linked rather than `(none)`, an Audio Clip can change pitch as the project tempo changes or its length is stretched. With `TIME > (none)`, Audio Clips keep their pitch and duration through project-tempo changes. Do not confuse the time-stretching PITCH knob with a tape-speed control: adjusting that knob preserves length and automatically changes Resample to Auto.

To keep pitch while changing duration, choose an appropriate [pitch-preserving stretch method](https://flstudiopro.com/fl-studio-time-stretch/). To keep the tape-style transformation as a new sound, render or record the resulting playback. A two-second, 440 Hz tone becomes four seconds at 220 Hz at half speed, or one second at 880 Hz at double speed. The durations share one scale. In FL Studio, check TIME linkage and Mode; render or record the changed playback to keep a new audio file.

### Changing sample rate is a separate operation

For genuine sample-rate conversion, open `Format > Edit properties` in Edison, or press `F2` with it focused. Set the required Sample rate and enable the `Resample` switch. The [Sample Properties reference](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/plugins/Edison%5F14.htm?ref=flstudiopro.com) states that this recalculates the sample data. With the switch off, changing the rate changes playback speed instead. Preserve the original and save the converted result under another name.

## Choose settings for the next editing step

For production material, FL Studio’s WAV export provides uncompressed, lossless audio. Choose 32-bit float when the next editor supports it and more processing is planned, or 24-bit integer for a destination that needs it. MP3 is a poor working-loop choice: FL Studio’s conversion adds a small initial silence, as well as using lossy encoding. - **Effects:** decide which Insert and Master processing should be permanent. Do not bake in the Master and then replay the file through the same Master chain without accounting for it.
- **Leave remainder:** extends the render to capture decay. If a wanted tail is still cut, Image-Line recommends a Playlist Repeat marker after the final Pattern, Audio or Automation Clip to extend the endpoint.
- **Wrap remainder:** mixes decay into the beginning. It starts its tail calculation at the last bar, so notes before that bar do not supply wrapped tails. Listen across the join; the option does not guarantee a seamless loop.
- **Cut remainder:** ends at the chosen bar, selection or marker boundary. Use it only when that endpoint suits the material.

Render resampling quality selects interpolation for Sampler and Audio Clip channels when their pitch or sample rate calls for intermediate values. It is not a universal quality control for every synthesizer or effect. Live interpolation is set separately in `Options > Audio settings`; differing settings can change the sound of transposed samples. Match them for that part of a controlled comparison, while checking plugin-specific quality settings separately. Choose the working format, permanent effects, ending and interpolation separately. Wrap calculates its tail from the last bar and does not guarantee a seamless join. Render interpolation applies to Sampler and Audio Clip channels, not every plugin.

## Check the print before disabling its source

Compare the original and print one at a time. Match loudness, then listen to the first transient, an automated passage, the stereo image and the full decay. Inspect clip gain, fades, pitch and stretching if the file changes after import. A louder result is not proof of better rendering, and a random or state-dependent source may not repeat identically on another pass.

There are two separate doubling mistakes. Playing the original beside its print adds two copies of the material. Sending an already processed print through the same effects again adds another processing pass. Muting the original fixes the first, not necessarily the second. Trace the Audio Clip’s destination and any returns using the [Mixer routing controls](https://flstudiopro.com/fl-studio-mixer/).

For CPU savings, disable only generators and effects no longer needed anywhere else in the song. Muting source clips can already alter the load depending on the instrument and Smart Disable behavior, so a waveform alone does not predict the saving. FL Studio’s [Smart Disable settings](https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/envsettings%5Faudio.htm?ref=flstudiopro.com) act on inactive plugins during live playback, not during offline rendering. Check actual load rather than assuming every unused-looking plugin has stopped.

Check two separate paths. Muting the source stops duplicate playback; routing the wet print without the same effects avoids another processing pass. Muting cannot remove effects already baked into the audio file.

## Troubleshoot the stage that changed the sound

Start with the stage that could explain the symptom: capture scope, render ending, physical edit or TIME and Mode. These are checks to make, not guaranteed diagnoses or one-click repairs.

## Keep a reusable file and a recoverable source

Name the result for its source, treatment and version, such as `Pad_GranularWet_01.wav`. Add tempo or key only when verified and useful. Store the file with the project or in your intended sample library; saving a new FLP is not an independent backup of every external sample. Keep the raw recording before cropping if later edits may need more of its beginning or tail.

### What is the quickest way to resample a Pattern in FL Studio?

Right-click it in the Picker Panel and choose Quick render as audio clip when the current render settings are suitable. Use Render as audio clip to review settings first. For Playlist-position automation, consolidate the arranged clips instead.

### Does consolidation include effects and automation?

Consolidation uses the selected clips in their Playlist context. Its documented default includes Insert effects, excludes Master effects and mutes the source clips. Review the actual render settings and any sidechain or return dependencies rather than assuming every audible path was included.

### How do I record effects into Edison?
