# How to Do Sidechain Compression in FL Studio

Sidechain is not a preset you drop on the kick. It is a control relationship: one sound tells a processor when to change another sound. In the usual FL Studio setup, the kick is the trigger, the bass or 808 is the target, and Fruity Limiter turns the target down for a moment whenever the kick arrives.

## What sidechain compression actually does

1. **Select the Kick Mixer insert.** The source must be selected before you create its route.

The kick keeps its audible Master route while a second, control-only route reaches Fruity Limiter on the bass track.

Threshold and ratio set the depth; attack opens the space; release decides whether the bass returns naturally or stays pinned down.
