# FL Studio Strumizer: Hotkey, Controls and Natural Chords

The FL Studio Strumizer spreads the notes of a chord so they do not all begin at the same instant. Select the chord notes in the Piano Roll and press **Alt/Option+S**. Turn **Start Time** positive for a low-to-high attack or negative for high-to-low, then use **Start Tension** to shape how the gaps widen or tighten across the chord.

That is the useful core of the tool. Velocity, Preserve end, End, Chop chords and Alternate direction solve narrower problems. Set them only after the attack order feels right. My preferred sequence is **selection → direction → spread → tension → velocity → note endings → multi-chord options → Accept**. It keeps one small timing decision from turning into an unreadable MIDI part.

## Select the chord notes the Strumizer should treat together

The Strumizer treats overlapping notes with the same start time as one chord. If four notes begin together and overlap, they form one strum event. A note that starts later is a separate event even if it belongs to the same harmony. A short note that ends before the others begin does not become part of their group.

Select only the notes you want to process. If nothing is selected, Piano Roll tools can affect the whole score, so a quick check is worth the second it takes. Start with a clean block chord. Equal starts make the result easy to read: every changed attack came from the tool, not from timing that was already present. Open Strum with **Alt/Option+S** or choose it from the Piano Roll Tools menu.

Select the notes that share one attack, then open Strum with Alt/Option+S. Leave unrelated melody and bass notes outside the selection.

## Read the window as Start, End and sequence options

The current Strum window has two main panels. **Start** controls attack timing and velocity. **End** controls note endings independently. Each panel has an enable light in its upper-left corner, so a knob can hold a value without that section affecting the notes.

Under Start, Time and Velocity each have a Start knob and a Tension knob. Preserve end and Trigger ahead sit below them. The End panel has its own Time Start and Tension controls. Chop chords and Alternate direction apply to the sequence rather than to one knob curve. Reset restores the default state, while Accept applies the preview and closes the tool.

Start shapes attacks and velocity; End shapes note releases. The lower options handle overlaps and direction changes across a sequence.

## Use the sign of Start Time to choose direction

A positive Start Time value moves through the chord from low pitches to high pitches. On the Piano Roll, the lowest note begins first and each higher note follows. A negative value reverses that order: the highest pitch begins first and the lower notes follow.

Think in pitch order, not in guitar-screen metaphors. A positive setting is low-to-high even if your hand motion, controller layout or sample makes the gesture feel different. The Piano Roll makes the rule visible: follow the left edges from the bottom note upward.

The distance from zero sets the overall spread. A small value separates the attacks while the chord still reads as one event. A large value turns the notes into a pronounced sweep. If the harmony arrives late against the beat, reduce the amount before trying to repair every note afterward.

### Center the spread with Trigger ahead when the beat must stay anchored

By default, the strum moves attacks away from their original shared start. **Trigger ahead** places attacks on both sides of that point. It can keep the perceived center of the chord closer to the beat, but some notes begin early. Leave enough space before the chord and check that the early attacks do not collide with the preceding phrase.

Positive Start Time begins at the lowest note. Negative Start Time begins at the highest note. Read direction from pitch order.

## Use Start Tension to shape spacing, not to set the total spread

Start Time decides how far the sequence spreads. Start Tension decides how that movement accelerates across the notes. With a positive Tension value, later gaps accelerate. With a negative value, the sequence decelerates.

That difference matters most in chords with four or more notes. A neutral curve produces more even spacing. Positive tension can make the first attacks feel close and the upper end open out. Negative tension can create a wider first gap followed by a tighter finish. The endpoints can look similar while the middle notes tell a different rhythmic story.

Set Start Time first, then move Tension while watching the interior attacks. If the first and last notes are in sensible places but the middle of the chord feels rushed, Tension is the right control. If the whole gesture is too long, return to Start Time.

Keep the same broad strum range, then use Tension to redistribute the middle attacks into an even, accelerating or decelerating curve.

## Shape the velocity slope separately from timing

**Velocity Start** changes successive note velocities across each strummed chord. A positive value decreases the velocity from one note to the next. A negative value increases it. The direction follows the chord’s processed note order, so inspect the velocity lane instead of assuming the top note should always be quieter.

**Velocity Tension** changes how quickly that velocity difference develops. Positive tension accelerates the change across the notes; negative tension decelerates it. The same principle as timing applies: Start sets the broad amount, Tension reshapes the curve between the endpoints.

Use velocity to clarify the gesture, not to force a weak sound to behave like a different instrument. Extreme slopes can make the last note disappear or make one pitch dominate the whole chord. Positive Velocity Start reduces successive velocities; negative values raise them. Tension changes where the strongest rate of change occurs.

## Choose whether starts, lengths or endings should stay fixed

Moving attacks creates a second decision: what happens to note endings? With **Preserve end** enabled, the original end positions stay in place while the starts move. Later attacks therefore become shorter notes. This is useful when the chord must release at one shared point, but a wide strum can leave the final note much shorter than the first.

With Preserve end off, note lengths can travel with their shifted starts. The staggered attack remains while the notes keep a more consistent duration. Neither behavior is universally correct. Choose based on whether the release point or the performed length matters more.

The **End** panel gives release timing its own Start and Tension controls, including negative shifts. Enable it only when the endings need a deliberate spread. Otherwise it adds another curve to diagnose. After adjusting End, inspect short notes closely so a moved release does not cross the corresponding start.

### Use Chop chords when held notes run into the next chord

**Chop chords** cuts a previously held chord where the next strum begins. It is designed for sequences in which sustained notes overlap the following chord event. Turn it on when the new attack should replace the old harmony cleanly. Leave it off when the overlap is intentional, such as a pedal-like transition or shared tone that should continue.

Preserve end keeps a common release and changes note lengths. End reshapes releases, while Chop chords clears held notes at the next strum.

## Alternate direction across real chord events

**Alternate direction** reverses successive strum events: one chord runs one way, the next runs the other way. Single notes are ignored when FL Studio counts reversal events. A melody note between two block chords therefore does not consume the next direction change.

This option works best on a sequence with consistent chord grouping. If notes that should belong together have slightly different original starts, the tool can read them as separate events. Align the block attacks before opening Strum, then use the alternating result as a phrase-level pattern.

Alternation adds motion quickly, but it can also make a four-chord loop sound mechanical. Keep it when the change supports the rhythm. Turn it off when the harmony needs the same attack emphasis every bar.

Chord events reverse direction in sequence. The isolated single note does not count as an event for the next reversal.

## A reliable workflow for a natural strum

1. **Clean the selection.** Align the intended block-chord starts and exclude melody, bass and ornament notes.
2. **Set direction.** Move Start Time slightly positive or negative and confirm the first attack by pitch.
3. **Set the spread.** Stop when the chord still reads as one gesture unless a pronounced sweep is the goal.
4. **Shape the middle.** Use Start Tension only after the first and last attacks are sensible.
5. **Add dynamics.** Set Velocity Start and Tension while watching the lane for lost or over-accented notes.
6. **Decide the release.** Compare Preserve end with moving lengths; use End only if the release needs its own curve.
7. **Resolve overlaps.** Enable Chop chords for held notes that should stop at the next event.
8. **Build the phrase.** Try Alternate direction only on a clean sequence of chord events.
9. **Accept and inspect.** Check the first and last note, the shortest length and the strongest and weakest velocity.

## Fix Strumizer problems at the cause

### The shortcut opens Strum but the intended chord does not move

Close or reset the preview, select the intended notes, and verify that their starts match and their lengths overlap. A later-starting note is not part of the same chord event.

### The strum direction sounds backward

Check which pitch begins first. Positive Start Time is low-to-high; negative is high-to-low. If the sample’s articulation makes that feel reversed, choose by the musical attack you hear while keeping the pitch rule clear.

### Later notes became too short

Preserve end is holding the old release while the starts move. Reduce the spread, disable Preserve end, or use the End panel to create a release pattern that leaves every note usable.

### The previous chord overlaps the next one

Enable Chop chords when the old harmony should stop at the new attack. If only one or two notes should carry across, leave Chop off and edit those endings individually after Accept.

### Every chord has the same obvious staircase

## Accept, then make only the cleanup the phrase needs

**Accept** applies the changes and closes the tool. The result can still be undone from Current project History or with **Ctrl+Z**. That makes Accept a clean handoff into normal Piano Roll editing, not a permanent lock.

After Accept, zoom in on the attack edges and velocity lane. Move one note only when you can name the problem: an early transient collides with the previous beat, the final attack lands too late, or a note became too short to speak clearly. Avoid quantizing the whole chord back to one line because that removes the effect you just built. The Strumizer works best as a precise chord editor. Start with attack order, keep timing and velocity as separate decisions, and treat note endings as their own musical choice. Once those three layers are clear, the extra sequence options become useful instead of mysterious.
