When FL Studio has no sound, press play and watch each peak meter before changing settings. If the instrument’s Channel or assigned Mixer Insert stays dark, the problem is inside the project. If the Insert moves but the Master track does not, check routing, mute and plugins. If the Master meter moves but the room is silent, check the selected audio device, Master output, interface, headphones and operating-system volume.
This FL Studio no sound workflow keeps the checks in evidence order. Reinstalling a driver cannot repair a muted Channel, and turning every Mixer knob cannot make sound reach headphones connected to a different hardware output.
Start with the first meter that stays dark
| What you see | Where sound stops | Check next |
|---|---|---|
| No Channel or Insert meter | Instrument, sample or Channel | Selected Channel, note data, plugin state, mute and level |
| Insert moves, Master stays dark | Internal Mixer route | Send to Master, mute/solo, effect chain and faders |
| Master moves, no audible output | Device or hardware path | Audio Settings, Master external output, interface and OS volume |
| Only one project is silent | Saved project state | Routing, plugins, automation and Master chain in that project |
| Sound disappears when switching apps | Device-release behavior | Auto close and driver sharing |
Use a known internal generator or a familiar sample for the test. A missing third-party preset creates a second uncertainty. Keep the volume low enough that restored output cannot surprise you.

Prove that the project is actually generating audio
Choose one instrument in the Channel Rack, open its Piano roll and confirm notes cross the playhead. Click the Channel or play a key while watching its assigned Mixer meter. If the meter never reacts, check whether the Channel is muted, its volume is down, the generator is disabled or the plugin itself has an empty preset or closed output.
An Audio Clip needs audible source data under the playhead. Zoom into the waveform and confirm Clip gain is not at silence, a fade has not covered the whole region and an automation curve is not holding the level at zero.
MIDI activity does not prove audio output. If a controller light blinks, FL Studio received note data; an instrument and audio route must still turn that data into sound. Use the MIDI troubleshooting guide only when the controller itself is not reaching FL Studio.
Follow the Channel into the correct Mixer Insert
FL Studio’s Playlist lanes are not automatically the same thing as Mixer tracks. A clip can sit on Playlist Track 5 while its Channel routes to Mixer Insert 12. Open the Channel Settings or Channel Rack routing selector, note the assigned Insert number and watch that meter.
The current Image-Line Mixer manual, checked September 4, 2026, states that all audio passes through the Mixer. Newly added Channels normally reach the Master unless redirected, but saved templates and projects can contain deliberate routes.
If the expected Insert is dark, temporarily choose a known working route or restore the Channel’s normal Master path. Do not randomly assign external outputs to every Insert. Internal routing and hardware output are separate layers.
Check mute, solo, fader and automation state
Look at the Channel, the assigned Insert and the Master. Confirm none is muted and the relevant faders are above silence. Clear accidental solo states that exclude the source or one of its required buses. A muted send or bus can silence several Channels even when their own meters move.
Automation can override the position you see when playback starts. Inspect volume, mute and routing Automation Clips, initialized controls and event automation. Stop playback, move the playhead into the silent section and watch whether a control jumps.
The Mixer routing guide explains inserts, sends and buses in full. Here the goal is narrower: find the first meter that receives signal and the next one that does not.
Bypass plugins one stage at a time
A generator can be silent before it reaches the Mixer. An effect can mute or gate the Insert. A Master plugin can silence the whole project. Bypass one plugin at a time from the end of the failing path toward the source, keeping the monitoring level conservative.
Look for trial-expired plugins, missing samples, output controls at zero, gates waiting for a sidechain, limiters with unusual settings and plugins that failed to load. When a Native Instruments product or Kontakt library is the missing stage, check the Native Access and FL Studio scan route. Do not delete the chain during diagnosis. Bypass preserves the project state and identifies the stage that changes the result.
If FL Studio becomes unstable or the project cannot open reliably, move to the dedicated project recovery workflow. A project that opens normally but is silent should be traced first.
Confirm the Master reaches an external output
Select the Master track and inspect its external output. Image-Line states that the Master must have an Output selected or FL Studio will not be audible. With a multi-output interface, use the Master Output selector to choose the pair connected to the monitors or headphone path you are using.
Other Mixer Inserts normally route internally to the Master and do not each need a hardware output. Assigning every track directly to an interface can bypass expected Master processing, duplicate signals or send audio to unused sockets.
If the Master meter moves and selecting the correct main pair restores sound, save the project and interface preset. The fault was not the instrument, Playlist or buffer.
Select the real playback device in Audio Settings
Open Options > Audio settings or press F10. In the Device menu, choose the driver for the output you intend to hear. On Windows, FL Studio ASIO can be a useful general route; a dedicated interface ASIO driver is usually preferable when the manufacturer supplies one. On macOS, choose the intended Core Audio device.
The official Audio Settings documentation, also checked September 4, 2026, says that FL Studio ASIO may need the actual Output selected on some Windows systems when [Default output] does not work. Open the FL Studio ASIO panel and choose the speakers, headphones or interface output you intend to hear.
Changing the operating-system default while FL Studio is open may not move an exclusive or dedicated driver to the new device. Re-select the driver or its output, then replay the known test sound.

Check the interface, headphones and operating system
Verify the interface is powered, recognized and connected directly enough to remain stable. Turn up its headphone or monitor control gradually. Confirm headphones are connected to the jack controlled by that knob, and monitors are connected to the selected output pair.
Play audio from another application through the same hardware. If the entire computer is silent, fix the operating-system or hardware path. If other applications work but the FL Studio Master meter moves silently, check the app volume in the Windows volume mixer, the selected driver and the Master output. If normal playback works but a microphone or guitar records silence, move to the audio-recording signal path.
Bluetooth devices can reconnect with a different profile or latency behavior. For diagnosis, use a wired output when possible. Reconnect the final device only after the signal path works.
Match a sample rate the device accepts
Check sample rate after the device and routing path are correct, especially when the driver status says the output failed to initialize. FL Studio’s Sample Rate setting controls the Mixer playback rate, while the selected driver reports which rates the hardware supports. Image-Line recommends 44,100 Hz where possible. If the device panel reports the current rate as unsupported, choose a supported value and let the driver reopen.
Do not change several rates, buffer controls and clock settings at once. First prove the correct device and output are selected. A rate change is a targeted fix when the hardware cannot start or reports a mismatch, not a universal cure for silence.
Fix sound that stops when FL Studio loses focus
If audio works until you click another application, inspect Auto close in Audio Settings. Image-Line’s no-sound support note identifies this setting when FL Studio stops outputting audio outside the foreground and tells users to disable it.
Driver sharing also matters. Image-Line says FL Studio ASIO is fully multi-client on most machines, so FL Studio and another application can usually play through it together. Some interface drivers use exclusive configurations. Choose behavior that matches the recording job; do not force several applications through an exclusive path and assume the project is broken.
Diagnose one silent project
Open a new empty project and load one native generator. If that works, the device and global output path are probably functional. Return to the silent project and compare:
- Master external output and fader;
- Master plugin chain;
- Channel and bus routing;
- mute, solo and automation state;
- missing plugins or samples;
- project-specific audio-device assumptions.
Save a new version before changing routing. A silent template can contain intentional monitor, stem or surround outputs that make sense on another system. Preserve the original while you restore a simple Channel → Insert → Master → main-output path.

Separate silence from crackling and latency
A larger buffer can help underruns, but it is not the first answer when every meter is dark or the Master has no output. If sound exists but clicks or breaks up, use the crackling-audio diagnosis. If live monitoring is delayed, use the audio-settings guide.
Keeping those symptoms separate prevents a familiar loop: the buffer is raised, monitoring becomes slower, the wrong output remains silent and the original problem is still unidentified.
Use this no-sound recovery order
- Turn monitoring down and play one known internal sound.
- Find the first dark meter: Channel, assigned Insert or Master.
- Check mute, solo, fader and automation at that stage.
- Bypass plugins one at a time along the failing path.
- Confirm the Channel reaches an Insert and that Insert reaches Master.
- Confirm the Master has the correct external output.
- Select the intended driver and actual output in Audio Settings.
- Check interface power, headphone/monitor control and OS app volume.
- Test a new empty project to separate global and project-specific faults.
- Save the restored configuration before reopening important work.
Continue through the FL Studio troubleshooting hub after sound returns. Diagnose the next symptom from evidence rather than keeping every emergency setting you tried.
Frequently asked questions
Why does FL Studio show Master activity but make no sound?
The project is reaching the Master, so check the Master external output, selected Audio Settings device, FL Studio ASIO actual output, interface/headphone path and operating-system app volume.
Why is only one FL Studio project silent?
The global device probably works. Check that project’s Master output and plugins, Channel-to-Mixer routing, bus mutes, automation and missing plugin or sample state. Save a copy before simplifying routes.
Why does my MIDI keyboard show activity but produce no sound?
MIDI activity proves input data arrived, not that an instrument and audio route are audible. Select a working Instrument Channel, then follow its Mixer Insert, Master and hardware output.
Why do my headphones work elsewhere but not in FL Studio?
FL Studio may be using a different driver or output pair. Select the intended device in Audio Settings, choose the actual output in its driver panel and confirm the Master routes to the headphone-connected pair.
Should I reinstall FL Studio when there is no sound?
Not first. Trace the meters, routing, Master output and audio device. Reinstall only after a clean project and verified hardware path still fail and evidence points to damaged application files.
