How to Download and Install FL Studio on Windows or Mac

By Daniel Brooks Updated Aug 24, 2026 8 min read

Quick answer

A safe, practical route from the official FL Studio download to a working Windows or Mac installation, license unlock, first launch and future updates.

FL Studio download and installation guide for Windows and Mac in a music workspace

The safe FL Studio download is the one hosted by Image-Line. Choose Windows or macOS on the official FL Studio download page, open that installer, and let your Image-Line account decide which edition unlocks. You do not need a separate Producer, Signature, or All Plugins installer.

This guide takes the whole route: checking compatibility, installing on either desktop platform, unlocking a paid license, protecting projects during an update, and confirming that the first launch actually works.

Download FL Studio without taking a shortcut through the wrong site

Search results for “FL Studio free download” are full of mirrors, repackaged installers, torrents, and pages that imitate a download button. None improves on the official source. A DAW can scan plugins, read project folders, and access audio devices; giving a modified installer that level of access is a poor trade for saving one click.

Start at Image-Line, choose your operating system, and check the version and file size printed beside the button. If a file arrived from somewhere else, delete that copy and download it again from the vendor. On Windows, the installer should identify Image-Line as the publisher when the security prompt appears. On Mac, stop if the package signature is reported as invalid and fetch a fresh copy instead of forcing a damaged download to run.

One trusted starting point, then two platform-specific installers. A search-result download mirror does not belong in the path.

Check the current requirements before downloading

Image-Line changes builds more often than a static guide should pretend. On August 25, 2026, the official download cards showed the following snapshot:

WindowsmacOS
Current build checked26.1.4.558926.1.4.5356
Installer size1.03 GB1.10 GB
Operating systemWindows 10 or 11macOS 10.15.7 or newer
ProcessorIntel or AMDIntel or Apple Silicon
Minimum memory4 GB RAM4 GB RAM
Free disk space4 GB minimum4 GB minimum

Use the live download card as the final word if its build or requirements differ from this dated snapshot. Four gigabytes of free space is an installation minimum, not a sensible long-term music-library budget. Projects, recordings, samples, backups, and third-party instruments can grow far beyond it.

The current Windows card lists Intel and AMD and says ARM is not supported. Image-Line's broader requirements page describes Windows on ARM as untested and unsupported by its support team. Either way, do not buy an ARM Windows machine assuming this guide can turn it into a supported FL Studio workstation. On macOS, Image-Line supports both Intel and Apple Silicon, but not a case-sensitive file system.

The trial and every paid edition use the same installer

The download page may call the file a trial installer even when you already own FL Studio. That is normal. Image-Line's installation guidance confirms that the trial installer is also the full installer. Your account license unlocks the edition and native plugins you own after installation.

That distinction prevents two common detours: hunting for a “Producer Edition download” and installing every Image-Line native plugin separately. There is one main desktop installer. If you are still deciding what to buy, the FL Studio editions comparison owns that question. The normal trial can make and export music, but it cannot reopen saved projects after FL Studio closes.

Before you install or update

For a first installation, close other audio software and make sure you can write to the normal Applications or Program Files location. For an update, spend one minute protecting the work that cannot be re-created:

  1. Close FL Studio.
  2. Back up your user data folder. In FL Studio 20 and later, the default is under Documents/Image-Line/FL Studio on both Windows and macOS.
  3. Note any custom Browser extra search folders and third-party plugin locations.
  4. On a Mac, move any personal project, preset, or sample stored inside FL Studio.app/Contents into the user-data folder before updating. The app bundle is replaced.

A normal update is designed to preserve your projects and settings, but a backup changes an inconvenience into a recoverable mistake.

How to install FL Studio on Windows

  1. On the official download page, choose Windows and let the installer finish downloading.
  2. Close FL Studio if an older version is running. Open the downloaded .exe file.
  3. When Windows asks whether the app may make changes, verify the publisher before continuing. If the publisher or filename looks wrong, cancel and download again from Image-Line.
  4. Read the installer screens and keep the normal FL Studio components selected. Keep default locations unless you already manage a deliberate multi-version or shared-studio setup.
  5. Finish the installation and launch FL Studio from the Start menu or the shortcut you chose to create.
  6. If you own a license, unlock it after the first launch. If not, the same installation opens in trial mode.

Verify the source and publisher before accepting the installer; edition choice happens later through the license.

Do not place projects or sample libraries inside the FL Studio program folder. Program files are replaceable; your songs are not. Keep working data in the user-data folder or another folder you deliberately back up.

How to install FL Studio on macOS

  1. Choose macOS on the official download page and wait for the .dmg to finish.
  2. Open the disk image, then run the included FL Studio package and follow the macOS Installer prompts.
  3. Install into the normal Applications location. Do not hide projects or samples inside the FL Studio app bundle.
  4. Launch FL Studio from Applications. Apple Silicon and Intel Macs use the native macOS release; Rosetta is not required for FL Studio itself.
  5. Unlock your license, or continue in trial mode.

The Mac installer belongs in the normal Applications workflow; personal music files stay outside the replaceable app bundle.

If macOS reports that the package signature is invalid, do not override that warning blindly. Confirm that your macOS version meets the current requirement, remove the damaged installer, and download a fresh copy from Image-Line. If Gatekeeper blocks a correctly signed current installer, check Privacy & Security for the specific blocked app rather than disabling protection system-wide.

Unlock FL Studio after purchasing

First confirm that the FL Studio license appears in the Image-Line account you plan to use. A direct Image-Line purchase is already attached to that account. A boxed copy or reseller code must be redeemed once before it can unlock the application.

The current Image-Line unlock procedure is the same on Windows and macOS:

  1. Open FL Studio.
  2. Choose Help → Unlock FL Studio → Sign in and unlock.
  3. Complete the Image-Line account sign-in in the browser or unlock panel.
  4. Enter the emailed six-digit code if two-factor authentication is enabled.
  5. Let FL Studio apply the license, then restart the application.

After restart, return to Help and check the account and edition shown there. FL Cloud is a separate service; an FL Cloud subscription by itself does not unlock an FL Studio desktop edition.

Unlock an offline computer

Offline activation is not simply copying a generic registration key from another computer. For FL Studio 20.9 and later, start Help → Unlock FL Studio → Unlock with file on the offline machine and save its validation file. Upload that file through your Image-Line account on an internet-connected device, download the generated FLRegkey.Reg, move it back, and load it through Unlock with file. The generated key belongs to the machine that created the validation file.

Restart FL Studio after the registration succeeds. Do not email license files around or store them in a public cloud link; they are account material, not tutorial assets.

Online unlock is the short path; offline unlock adds a machine validation file. Both finish with a restart and license check.

Make the first launch useful

A successful installation is not just an application window that opens. Play a stock sound, confirm that the Master meter moves, save a small test FLP, and export a few seconds of audio. Trial users should remember that they can export but cannot reopen the saved FLP after closing the program.

If sound is delayed, silent, or routed to the wrong device, use the FL Studio audio settings guide instead of reinstalling the DAW. Once playback behaves, the first-song FL Studio tutorial takes you from Channel Rack to Playlist, Mixer, and export.

How to update FL Studio without losing projects

For a normal current-version update, Image-Line says to download the newest installer and run it over the existing installation. You do not need to uninstall first. Close FL Studio, make the backup described above, run the new installer, and unlock again if prompted.

After the update, open one disposable project before opening a client session or irreplaceable song. Check your audio device, Browser folders, favorite plugins, one third-party instrument, and a short export. FL Studio user data should remain, but a third-party plugin can still have its own architecture, authorization, or compatibility problem.

The official update and migration manual also explains parallel versions, old FL Studio 11/12 data, new-computer migration, and clean uninstall. Those are repair jobs, not reasons to turn every routine update into a clean install.

Frequently asked questions

Can I download FL Studio for free?

Yes. Image-Line provides the full desktop installer as a free, non-expiring trial. It can make and export music, but the normal trial cannot reopen saved projects after FL Studio closes. A paid license unlocks the edition attached to your account.

Which FL Studio edition should I download?

Download the same official installer for Fruity, Producer, Signature, or All Plugins Edition. Your Image-Line account license decides which features and native plugins unlock.

Can one license install FL Studio on Windows and Mac?

Yes. Image-Line permits the license owner to use the same license on Windows and macOS computers they control, provided the license is not shared with other users.

Do I need to uninstall FL Studio before an update?

No for a normal update. Close FL Studio, back up the user-data folder, download the current installer from Image-Line, and install it over the existing version. A clean uninstall is a separate repair procedure.

Will updating FL Studio delete my projects?

Current FL Studio user data is stored outside the program folder, so a normal update is designed to preserve it. Back up Documents/Image-Line/FL Studio anyway. On macOS, move any personal files out of the FL Studio app bundle because an update replaces that bundle.

Does FL Studio run on Apple Silicon?

Yes. The current native macOS version supports both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. Third-party plugins still need compatible macOS builds and may have different architecture requirements.

Can I install desktop FL Studio on a Chromebook or phone?

The desktop installer in this guide supports Windows and macOS. FL Studio Mobile is a separate product, and unsupported Chromebook/Linux workarounds are not equivalent to a supported desktop installation.
